SUMMARY STATEMENT
The Temporary Registration Advisor works directly with students, advising them in their course section, developing educational plans, and assisting them with potential career and transfer opportunities in the community college setting. 


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • The Temporary Registration Advisor reports directly and is responsible to the Director of Advising, Registration and Student Support.
  • This position does not require the supervision of other staff.
  • The Temporary Registration Advisor coordinates most closely with students, Student Support Advisors, Registration Assistants, college faculty and staff to include Student Financial Aid, Records, Admission, Disability Support Services, Cohorts, Developmental Education, and the Testing Center. 

GENERAL ADVISING DUTIES:
  • Provides academic advisement for both new and returning students, which includes the ability to:
    • Interpret standardized test and placement test results.
    • Interpret courses, grades, and codes listed on high school and college transcripts.
    • Explain information in the college catalog regarding degree, certificate, and letter of recognition program requirements.
    • Explain college policies and procedures to students based on individual needs.
    • Assist students in scheduling courses.
    • Assists students in understanding the transfer process by providing accurate information about application deadlines and procedures, course transferability, and contact information.
    • Assist students in career planning and development.
    • Assist students in the use of online academic advising resources.
    • Refer students to appropriate offices and faculty advisors on campus.
    • Explain financial aid rules and regulations.
  • Assist students with registration questions and with navigating Self-Service’s registration functions, as needed, in the scheduling lab.
  • Helps students to understand their aptitudes, capabilities, and limitations in making personal decisions, educational plans, and career choices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree required; experience working with students in higher education; background in the Maryland and out-of-state transfer articulation system; knowledge and experience with a student database system.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
interpersonal skills to guide students in their academic decision-making; excellent organizational and planning skills in dealing with the career and transfer student population; advising and communication skills to deal effectively with students, faculty, and staff; database system skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Normal office environment with walk-in appointments. Some evening and weekend duties may be required.
