Description

We invite passionate, collaborative nursing professionals to apply for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in our Certified Nursing Assistant Program. This is a 9-month position anticipated to begin August 2026.

Heartlands CNA program is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and prepares students for meaningful careers in long-term care and healthcare settings.

As a faculty member, you will play a key role in preparing the next generation of nursing assistants through engaging instruction, supportive mentorship, and participation in program development. There is an optional additional assignment as the CNA Program Coordinator, dependent upon IDPH eligibility requirements for Program Coordinators.

The primary duty of faculty members is to teach. In addition to teaching, class preparation, grading, and holding office hours, general responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create a learning environment that fosters student success and the attainment of defined learning outcomes
  • Participate in developing and reviewing curricula and instructional methods
  • Assist in the articulation of courses within the division
  • Develop, integrate and evaluate student learning outcomes within the framework of the Heartland Community College assessment protocols
  • Remain current in ones discipline
  • Advocate for student persistence and pathways to completion through cooperation with Student Success and Enrollment Services staff
  • Manage student issues and problems in a manner consistent with the Student Handbook
  • Serve the institution in a variety of ways; examples of service activity include, but are not limited to, participation on teams and committees, assistance with marketing and recruitment events, and promotion of a collegial work environment
  • Participate in program review

The hired individual may be expected to teach a range of courses as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) licensure
  • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience with at least one (1) year of experience in one of the following areas:
  • Teaching theory in an accredited nurse training program
  • Providing nursing care, including personal care and activities of daily living, to older adults or for chronically ill adults
  • Provision of long-term care facility services or direct care

ADN or diploma nurses are required to complete an IDPH-approved Train the Trainer program that includes instruction in Alzheimers Disease and related dementias of at least four (4) hours or four (4) CEU credits.

Registered professional nurses possessing a BSN degree or higher may be exempt from Train the Trainer program completion requirement, but will need to provide documentation of completion of an IDPH-approved specialized workshop, course, seminar, continuing education unit, or other approved training for instruction in Alzheimers Disease and related dementias of at least four (4) hours or four (4) CEU credits.

Desired Qualifications

  • Eligibility to be approved as a Program Coordinator by the IDPH
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching and/or curriculum development experience in a nursing assistant program
  • Ability to teach additional courses within other Health Sciences disciplines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDPH regulations, Illinois Administrative Code Title 77, and OBRA 1987 standards related to CNA education

Lecture is 5 ECH; Lab is 2 ECH; and Clinical is 4 ECH, with a preference for the same instructor to teach lab and clinical components for consistency with students.

Anticipated starting salary range for this 9-month position is $48,356 - $65,034, plus any applicable pay for overload and/or summer assignments.

EMPLOYEE LEAVE

Sick Leave: 10 days per year, pro-rated from employment date

If hired in August, 10 days (80 hours) of sick leave awarded on start date; If hired in January, 5 days (40 hours) of sick leave awarded on start date;

Monthly accrual in subsequent years starting every August;

Awarded 16 hours of sick leave for teaching 6 or more ECH in Summer term; Awarded 8 hours of sick leave for teaching 3-5 ECH in Summer term

Personal Leave: 5 days (40 hours)per year, pro-rated from employment date

Unused personal leave converts to sick leave days at the end of employment year

Volunteer Leave: 1 day (8 hours) per year with no annual carry-over

8 hours awarded on start date, then annually awarded at the start of the calendar year on January 1

Bereavement Leave: Up to 5 days (40 hours) per occurrence

Holidays: The College is closed on the following holidays:

Labor Day, Wednesday through Friday of Thanksgiving week, Christmas Eve Day through New Years Day inclusively, Dr. Martin Luther Kings Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, and Independence Day
