Test Engineer, Packaging Product Design

The Packaging team is a diverse group of people responsible for the design and execution of structural packaging for every Apple product, shipped to customers around the world. We collaborate with a wide range of teams, including Industrial Design, Marketing, Environmental, and Operations, throughout the design process. Our packaging delivers an outstanding unboxing experience, protects products throughout the shipping environment, and advances Apple's sustainability goals. Our work plays a role in Apples long-term environmental initiatives by helping reduce carbon impact across one of the largest packaging supply chains in the world. Our team determines product and packaging integrity throughout the shipping process. Using data analysis and statistical modeling, we test products in their packaging to validate they will arrive at customers doorsteps at the high level of quality expected of Apple products.Develop hardware and software test systems to collect analytics on design performance. Create arrays of metrology measurements and failure analysis metrics to benchmark designs. Contribute to long-term initiatives that advance Apples environmental and carbon reduction goals through sustainable packaging design and material innovation. Collaborate with internal and external teams to align priorities to achieve optimal design solutions. Partner with supplier teams to ensure successful execution of validation plans. Statistically analyze data to provide risk assessments and technical recommendations.BS in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or similar degree. 3+ years experience developing new products, utilizing statistical software (JMP preferred) for data analysis. Solid engineering fundamentals with a basic understanding of design and metrology. Data-driven with ability to solve complex and novel technical problems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a team-based environment. Ability to travel up to 20% to support engineering build activities and design development.MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or similar degree. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, including overseeing third-party vendors. Introductory knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and evaluation testing standards such as ASTM, TAPPI, and ISTA.
