Typically requires a minimum of 2 - 4 years of related experience.
What He s Looking For- Mechanical Engineers tend to work well because they re hands-on
- Open to new grads, especially Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
- High school diploma with relevant hands-on experience can also work
- Experience is a plus, but Young is willing to train
- Really wants people who are invested in the work and are go-getters
- Good hands-on/mechanical experience is important
- Need to be comfortable with physical work:
- About half the process is physical alignment
- Climbing/crouching inside the tool
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
- Other half of the process is testing and troubleshooting
- Candidates start with initial alignments and move into more testing/troubleshooting as they ramp up
Hands-on / Mechanical- Tell me about the most hands-on technical work you ve done. What equipment or tools did you work with?
- Give me an example of something you ve assembled, aligned, repaired, tested, or troubleshot.
- What mechanical, electrical, or test tools are you comfortable using?
- Have you done any work involving precision alignment or adjustments of mechanical, electrical, or optical components?
Troubleshooting / Testing- Walk me through a technical problem you had to troubleshoot. What was wrong, what did you check, and how did you find the solution?
- If your first troubleshooting step didn t work, what did you do next?
- How did you test or confirm that the issue was fixed?
- Have you used software, test results, or data as part of troubleshooting equipment? How?
Physical / Cleanroom Environment- Are you comfortable working in a cleanroom and wearing a bunny suit for extended periods?
- This is a very hands-on role that requires climbing/crouching inside large equipment and spending significant time doing physical alignment work. Are you comfortable with that?
- Are you able to lift at least 50 lbs.?
- Are you comfortable being on your feet and working physically with equipment throughout the shift?
Learning / Motivation- Tell me about a new piece of equipment or technical process you had to learn. How did you get up to speed?
- What interests you about working in the semiconductor industry and learning optics integration?
- This team integrates mechanical hardware, optics, and software. How do you feel about learning areas you may not have experience with today?
- This can take 2 3 years to fully learn. Are you interested in investing the time to become really strong in this type of work?
- What are you hoping to learn or gain from your next position?
Long-Term Interest / Growth- Are you looking for something you could potentially grow into long-term if a full-time opportunity became available?
- Would the opportunity to build specialized optics experience and potentially grow into other technical opportunities be appealing to you?
- What would keep you interested and motivated in a role for the next few years?
New Grads- Tell me about your most hands-on or technical school project. What did you personally work on?
- Did the project involve assembling, testing, aligning, or troubleshooting anything? Walk me through it.
- What problems came up, and how did you work through them?
Work History / Stability- Can you walk me through any shorter positions or contract assignments and why they ended?
- For your contract roles, were they completed as planned or was there an opportunity to extend or convert?
- What are you looking for in your next position that would make you want to stay long-term?
Shift / Schedule- Are you comfortable consistently working the required shift?
- Day: Sunday Thursday, 6:00 AM 4:00 PM
- Day: Tuesday Saturday, 6:00 AM 4:00 PM
- Night: 3:30 PM 1:30 AM
- Are you comfortable occasionally working a mandatory 6th day during busier periods?
- Do you have any scheduling restrictions that would prevent you from consistently working your assigned shift?
He s willing to train, including
new Mechanical/Electrical Engineering grads and candidates without degrees who have relevant hands-on experience.
The biggest things to validate are:
- Actually hands-on/mechanically inclined
- Comfortable with a very physical role
- Can troubleshoot and explain their thought process
- Willing and excited to learn
- Comfortable committing to a long ramp-up
- Genuinely interested in the semiconductor/optics environment
- Stable work history or good explanations for shorter assignments
- Fully comfortable with cleanroom, bunny suit, 50-lb lifting and shift requirements
The stability question is particularly important for Young. Since it takes
2 3 years to fully develop someone, a candidate with great technical experience but a pattern of leaving every 6 12 months could be less attractive than a slightly more junior candidate who is hands-on, motivated, and genuinely wants to grow with the team.
