The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, technical problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to safely execute complex testing involving mechanical loads, pressurized systems, electrical systems, instrumentation, and stored energy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, assemble, terminate, instrument, and configure test articles, fixtures, and test systems required for qualification, verification, production, and R&D testing.
- Set up and execute mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, dimensional, and other specialized testing in accordance with approved test procedures, project requirements, and applicable API 17E requirements.
- Set up, operate, and monitor specialized test equipment, instrumentation, measurement devices, and data acquisition systems while maintaining required test parameters and equipment limitations.
- Collect, record, and maintain accurate test data and records; identify abnormal conditions, deviations, or unexpected results and communicate them to Engineering, Quality, or Production leadership as appropriate.
- Support R&D, product qualification, engineering investigations, and development of non-routine test configurations through hands-on assembly, fabrication, test setup, troubleshooting, and execution.
- Perform pre-use equipment checks, test-area preparation, hazard assessments, and required documentation while maintaining test equipment, fixtures, tooling, and work areas in a safe and operational condition.
Education & Experience
Minimum
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 3–5 years of experience in industrial testing, mechanical assembly, manufacturing, oil and gas, marine, cable, hydraulics, instrumentation, or a similar technical environment.
- Demonstrated experience performing hands-on technical work requiring adherence to controlled procedures, specifications, drawings, or acceptance criteria.
Preference
- Experience handling large reels, cable, pipe, fabricated structures, or other large or heavy products.
- Experience with cranes, forklifts, winches, tensioning equipment, or similar material handling systems.
- Previous experience supporting heavy lifts, industrial load-outs, vessel mobilizations, or marine operations.
- Applicable rigging, forklift, telehandler, crane, or material-handling training or certifications.

- Ability to accurately collect, record, organize, and communicate technical test data while maintaining required documentation and traceability.
- Understanding of hazards associated with mechanical loading, stored energy, pressurized systems, electrical systems, suspended loads, and moving equipment.
- Ability to recognize abnormal test conditions, equipment behavior, or results and stop testing when established limits or safe operating conditions are exceeded.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively with Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and other technical personnel during qualification, investigation, and R&D activities.
- Ability to learn and apply applicable company procedures, project requirements, industry standards, and API 17E requirements governing assigned testing activities.
Context
The Test Lab Technician works in a specialized industrial laboratory supporting the testing and qualification of subsea umbilicals, components, and related products. Subsea umbilicals are complex flexible products containing combinations of hydraulic, electrical, fiber-optic, and structural elements used to provide power, control, communication, and other services to offshore equipment.
Testing may involve full-scale umbilical samples, individual components, mechanical assemblies, or purpose-built test articles. Technicians prepare the test article and execute the test, requiring a combination of mechanical assembly, termination, instrumentation, equipment operation, and testing skills.
Test activities may involve mechanical loading, bending and tension, pressure systems, electrical testing, dimensional measurement, specialized fixtures, sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems. Research and development activities may require non-routine configurations, custom fixtures, or test methods developed specifically to evaluate product designs, materials, manufacturing processes, or performance.
The position works closely with Production Leads, Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, HSE, Projects, and customer or third-party representatives when applicable. Testing may require extended-duration operation, shift coverage, or schedule flexibility based on test duration and project requirements.
Authorities
- Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, or procedural deviations are identified.
- Stop or suspend testing when approved test parameters, equipment limitations, or established safety limits are exceeded.
- Identify and remove damaged or defective test equipment, tooling, fixtures, or instrumentation from service within assigned training and responsibility.
- Escalate abnormal test results, equipment behavior, procedural deviations, or conditions requiring technical evaluation before testing continues.
