Job Description

About the Role

Lead tooling, automation, and controls strategy for a growing defense and space manufacturing operation as it scales from product development into higher-rate production. You will guide a team of tooling engineers and shape safe, effective manufacturing capabilities across production programs.

What You'll Do

  • Set direction for tooling development across production programs, including fixtures, automated work cells, and robotic systems.
  • Assess tooling complexity and determine how solutions fit into production floor layouts and program priorities.
  • Develop safe tooling and handling solutions for operations involving energetic materials and large volumes of propellant mixtures.
  • Manage and mentor tooling engineers, prioritizing work to address production needs.
  • Partner with facilities, manufacturing, and engineering teams on layout, dynamic loading, safety, and scalability.
  • Lead projects from concept through commissioning, including vendor coordination, capital equipment procurement, and controls deployment.

What We're Looking For

  • 8 to 15 years of experience in tooling design, automation, and controls for complex manufacturing, including custom tooling and fixtures for large assemblies.
  • At least 2 to 3 years of experience leading or directing a tooling or automation team and prioritizing engineering work.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience making strategic decisions about tooling scope, complexity, and sequencing, and setting up production lines or tooling programs from scratch or during major scale-up.
  • Knowledge of safety-critical tooling for heavy loads, hazardous materials, or energetics handling.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks, NX, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, Rockwell, Beckhoff, Siemens, PLCs, HMI, SCADA, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, industrial robotics, machine vision, or safety PLCs.
  • ITAR-eligible status and authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
