The Field Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating safety, technical, and operational training programs for PowerGrid Services employees. This role serves as a subject matter expert and coach in field operations, ensuring employees are trained to perform their duties safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

The Field Trainer will regularly observe employees in field environments, assess work practices, verify competency, and provide both classroom and hands-on instruction. This position also supports incident investigations and may be called upon to assist with storm restoration efforts and other operational needs.

The successful candidate must be available to respond to after-hours events, including overnight assignments, and should expect frequent travel, extended work hours during emergency response situations, and work in challenging weather conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct field observations to evaluate employee work practices and identify safety concerns, training opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Verify employee competency in assigned job tasks and assist with qualification and certification processes.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver training programs, including but not limited to:
    • New Hire Orientation
    • Apprenticeship Training
    • CPR/First Aid/AED
    • Pole Top and Bucket Rescue
    • Safety and Compliance Training
    • Technical Skills Development
  • Facilitate classroom instruction, field exercises, and refresher training sessions.
  • Maintain training records and assist with tracking employee certifications and qualifications.
  • Support incident investigations by gathering information, conducting interviews, and identifying corrective actions and training needs.
  • Collaborate with operations leadership to improve workforce performance, safety culture, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and constructive feedback to employees at all levels.
  • Assist with storm restoration activities and other operational assignments as needed.
  • Partner with internal departments and stakeholders to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Stay current on industry trends, safety regulations, utility standards, and best practices.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Additional technical, vocational, or industry-related training preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Extensive experience with overhead and underground utility construction, maintenance, and operations involving both primary and secondary systems preferred.
  • Experience developing, facilitating, and implementing employee training programs.
  • Experience leading meetings and presenting information to employees, supervisors, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and employee interviews preferred.

Certifications

Preferred certifications include:

  • OSHA 10 and OSHA 30
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor Certification
  • Flagger Trainer Certification
  • Forklift and Telehandler Certification
  • Pole Top and Bucket Rescue Instructor Certification
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Trainer Certification
  • Additional industry-related safety and training certifications as applicable

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in both office and field environments.
  • Frequent travel, including overnight travel, is required.
  • Must be available for emergency response, storm restoration, and after-hours assignments, including overnight work.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as business needs dictate.
  • Frequently exposed to outdoor conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, and other adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Requires frequent use of hands, wrists, and fingers for operating equipment and computer systems.
  • Must possess sufficient visual acuity to review documents, analyze data, observe work activities, and operate a computer.
  • Ability to safely navigate active construction and utility work sites.
