LEAD BUS MECHANIC

We're looking for an experienced Lead Bus Mechanic to keep our fleet safe, reliable, and ready to transport students every day.

This is a hands-on position for an experienced mechanic with strong diesel repair and diagnostic skills who can independently maintain, troubleshoot, and repair school buses and District fleet vehicles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are representative and may be supplemented as needed. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential duties.

• Diagnose, maintain, and repair school buses and District vehicles in accordance with State requirements, Arizona Department of Public Safety inspections, and District safety procedures.
• Service and repair diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic and standard transmissions, brake and air brake systems, electrical systems, wheelchair lifts and restraints, tires/wheels, windows, lighting, and related vehicle components.
• Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, diagnostic testing, and road tests to ensure vehicles are safe, operational, and route-ready.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues using diagnostic equipment, vehicle operation, and information provided by drivers and equipment operators.
• Respond to vehicle breakdowns and maintenance needs in the shop or field, including after-hours calls as needed.
• Pre-trip white fleet vehicles and drive established school bus routes when required.
• Maintain accurate vehicle maintenance and repair records, including work performed, labor hours, and parts used; complete and submit work orders promptly.
• Maintain appropriate inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment; identify needed parts and submit orders in accordance with District purchasing procedures.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop and follow OSHA requirements and District safety procedures.
• Maintain required mechanic tools on-site as specified by the Transportation Mechanic Tool List.
• Work collaboratively with drivers and Transportation Department staff and respond promptly to operational needs.
• Participate in continuing education and training to maintain current technical knowledge and job skills.
• Assist with other transportation-related duties as needed.
• Support and follow District policies and the ACT Statement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful candidates should have:

• Knowledge of automotive and diesel trade practices, tools, equipment, electrical systems, and internal combustion engines.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards, transportation-related safety hazards, and precautions associated with vehicles, petroleum-based chemicals, solvents, and exhaust fumes.
• Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to independently diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment in the shop or field.
• Ability to safely operate diagnostic tools, power equipment, and other equipment used in vehicle maintenance and repair.
• Ability to change and repair tires.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or GED.
• Previous automotive, diesel, fleet, or heavy-equipment maintenance experience preferred.

LICENSES & REQUIREMENTS

• Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Commercial Driver License (CDL).
• Ability to obtain an Arizona school bus certification/license.
• Acceptable driving record and current personal automobile insurance coverage.
• Ability to successfully complete the Transportation physical agility test.
• Must comply with required annual, random, reasonable-suspicion/for-cause, and other applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is an active, hands-on mechanical position. The employee regularly stands, walks, sits, reaches, handles tools and equipment, climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, and crawls.

The employee must regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The position also requires close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
