    1 Revised August 2026 Job Title: Transportation Operations Specialist Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt Reports to: Transportation Director Pay Grade: Auxiliary TR3 Dept/School: Transportation Days Employed: 226

    Primary Purpose: With oversight from the Transportation Director, coordinate daily routes and field trips to ensure that they are safe and all running as scheduled. Assist with daily transportation operations and support transportation personnel. Maintains data required for Texas Education Agency Transportation Reports; to include ridership, route descriptions and fleet utilized. Effectively facilitates and manages the flow of information pertaining to pupil data as needed. Maintains the highest level of professional communication with campus administrators, fellow employees and our community.

    Qualifications: Education/Certification: High School Diploma or GED Certificate, Preferred Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) With "S" and "P" endorsements Valid Department of Transportation DOT Physical Certification Valid School Bus Certification Card Acceptable criminal background record and pass state fingerprinting requirements Acceptable driving record as determined by the Department of Public Safety, Department of Transportation, and Texas Education Agency Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Official, Supervisor, Specialist or Trainer Certification, Preferred

    Special Knowledge/Skills: Possesses operational/functional knowledge of computerized routing and field trip software. (TransAct preferred) Ability to work collaboratively with campus administrators, staff, students, and parents. Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Experience with Microsoft Suite and/or Google Suite. Well-established student management techniques Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accommodate a split shift schedule as needed based on operational needs. Ability to be available after hours for calls regarding emergencies on field trips.

    Experience: Two years experience as a certified school bus driver.

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    Routing:

    1. Maintains, creates, and implements safe, efficient, and effective bus route information on the computerized routing system. Continuously develops and maintains all bus routes, runs and stops.
    2. Knowledge of demographic and transportation routing software.
    3. Knowledgeable in adult training techniques and possess a mechanical aptitude, and strong leadership skills.
    4. Strong organizational and presentation skills.

    1. Excellent interpersonal skills and well developed written and verbal communication skills.
    2. Basic math skills, detail oriented, mapping and routing skills.
    3. Maintain records for preparation of state and local reports such as inventories, pupil transported, route mileage.
    4. Maintain routing and routing descriptions.
    5. Create, provide, and maintain transportation maps and bus routes/schedules.

    Field Trips:

    1. Inputs, schedules, assigns drivers and vehicles when coordinating all extra-curricular trip requests from school personnel using the field trip software.
    2. Communicates and coordinates the use of personnel and equipment as well as all trip information to appropriate parties: drivers, campus, dispatch, sponsor, and other key personnel.
    3. Provides training on the usage of the field trip request system and processes with campus personnel.
    4. Communicates any problems or changes to appropriate parties: drivers, campus, dispatch, sponsor, and other key personnel.
    5. Reviews and explains field trip policies and procedures to all drivers as needed. Discusses any breach of policy, problems or irregularities with the Director of Transportation.
    6. Enter the data from field trip sheets into the field trip software in a timely manner to ensure that each trip is charged and billed accordingly (i.e. hours, mileage, fuel, etc.).

    Driving Duties:

    1. Perform duties as relief/cover driver when needed. Perform all duties as expected of a bus driver when transporting students.

    Fleet:

    1. Assist with the coordination of service for vehicle/trailer compliance with all State and Federal regulations

    Additionally:

    1. During inclement weather, observe and report road conditions to the Transportation Director.
    2. Attends professional development activities/programs to keep abreast of developments and innovations regarding pupil transportation.
    3. Other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities: None

    Equipment Used: Fire extinguisher, other tools necessary to perform routine maintenance on fleet, passenger bus, handheld two-way radios, personal computer.

    3 Revised August 2026 Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to sit, talk, frequent walking, standing and reaching with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and color vision. Driving is required. Some night and Saturday work, irregular or extended hours required. On-call whenever drivers are transporting.
