    Trauma Nurse Clinician - BSN

    Position Summary

    The Trauma Nurse Clinician (TNC) is a highly specialized registered nurse who delivers expert, hands-on trauma care at Kootenai Health. Working closely with physicians, surgeons, ED and hospital staff, and prehospital providers, the TNC provides rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and ongoing care to critically injured patients across the continuum. In addition to participating in trauma surveys, rounds, and patient education, the TNC supports seamless care transitions and follow-up. This role also provides bedside mentorship, promotes best practices, and helps ensure compliance with trauma standards and hospital initiatives. Reporting to the Trauma Program Manager, the TNC fosters a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence. The clinician plays a key role in the Trauma Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) program, driving outcomes and system-wide improvement.

    Responsibilities

    • Immediately available to the ED during shift to provide direct trauma care
    • Collaborates with providers to lead and document trauma resuscitations, ensuring necessary team members are present
    • Continues resuscitation and care in OR, IR, ICU, and other clinical areas, as needed
    • Provides real-time, evidence-based trauma interventions using TNCC/ATCN principles
    • Assists providers during trauma-related procedures and examinations
    • Maintains clinical expertise through direct patient care and evaluation across the continuum
    • Participates in daily multidisciplinary rounds and care conferences, as available
    • Supports coordinated movement of trauma patients through all phases of care
    • Collaborates with providers and care management teams for seamless transitions and follow-up
    • Serves as a trauma resource for patients, families, bedside nurses, ancillary services, and providers
    • Provides real-time feedback and coaching to promote best practice
    • Facilitates bedside learning opportunities and supports staff during trauma care delivery
    • Acts as primary preceptor for trauma services and assists with staff education, training, and in-services
    • Functions as a clinical resource and change agent for trauma-related care improvements
    • Participates in trauma performance improvement and quality initiatives, including loop closure
    • Identifies, validates, and follows up on issues to improve outcomes and care delivery
    • Attends trauma and hospital-wide committees assigned
    • Supports trauma program administrative, outreach, injury prevention, and research initiatives
    • Maintains compliance with accreditation and trauma verification standards
    • Promotes consistent trauma care practices and elevates clinical standards
    • Communicates proactively with charge nurses, trauma leadership, and hospital supervisors, especially during multiple traumas activations or mass casualty incidents
    • Escalates safety concerns appropriately and supports a culture of accountability and excellence
    • Participates in daily sign-out when available and ensures alignment with hospital-wide care goals
    • Demonstrates flexibility in care delivery based on available resources
    • Supports system-level solutions and clinical innovation efforts
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
    • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function
    • Performs other related duties as assigned
    • Competent to meet age-specific needs of all traumatically injured patients

    Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

    • BSN required
    • Graduate of a nationally accredited Nursing program required
    • State of Idaho Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the "multistate privilege to practice" compact with Idaho
    • Minimum 2 years clinical experience in emergency, trauma, or critical care required; 3 years' emergency, trauma or critical care experience in an American College of Surgeons verified level I or II trauma center preferred
    • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience preferred
    • Advanced certification required within 6 months of hire to demonstrate clinical expertise, TCRN (preferably), CEN and/or CCRN
    • Kootenai Health leadership development program as designated by trauma program manager
    • BLS required
    • ACLS required
    • PALS required
    • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC) required
    • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) required, TNCC or ATCN instructor preferred
    • Advanced Trauma Course for Nurses (ATCN) within 1 year of hire; TNCC or ATCN instructor preferred
    • Trauma Outcomes and Performance Improvement Course (TOPIC) completion within the last 5 years preferred
    • 12-hours of trauma continuing education required annually
    • NIHSS required within 90 days of hire
    • Procedural sedation required

    Working Conditions

    • Must be able to maintain a standing position
    • Typical equipment used in a clinical job
    • Must be able to stoop, crouch, or bend
    • Must be able to lift or move up to 35 lbs
    • Must be able to push, pull or transport heavy equipment
    • Must be able to assist in patient transfer
    • Exposure to needles, blood and body fluids, etc.
    • Must be able to reach arms above or below shoulder height
