Description

Job Title: Emergency Room Registered Nurse Profession: RN (Registered Nurse) Specialty: Emergency Room Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Evening/Night Hours per Shift: 36 hours per week Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience required License: Must have a valid RN license Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS, TNCC required Must-Have: Pediatric experience is essential. Cerner experience is preferred. Experience in Level 1 or 2 trauma care is ideal. Description: This position is for an Emergency Room Registered Nurse. The department operates as an adult and pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center that also receives STEMI and stroke cases. The unit has 38 beds, including 5 trauma bays and resuscitation rooms. There is no Fast Track in place; however, there is an Urgent Care. Patients are triaged in two dedicated bays located behind the registration desk. All nurses are expected to triage patients arriving from ambulances. The Emergency Room does not have a separate holding area; patients are intermixed in the ER. Four dedicated rooms are available for psychiatric care within the department. Security is available in-house 24/7 but is not stationed in the ER. Upon average, the department treats 140-180 patients per day. The nurse-to-patient ratio in the ER is 1:3, and in the Urgent Care is 1:6. Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headaches, and suicidal ideation. Nurses must be knowledgeable in administering common IV drips such as heparin, nitroglycerin, and norepinephrine. The department is staffed with ED physicians, mid-level providers, and urgent care physicians. A charge nurse is present, especially on day shifts where they may not take patient assignments. Patient care technicians are scheduled to assist RNs. Respiratory therapy is not available 24/7 in the ER but is accessible at all times for critical interventions. RNs are responsible for drawing labs and performing blood cultures if necessary. All nurses work 12-hour shifts with a structured scheduling system. Weekend and holiday requirements necessitate working every other weekend and holiday. Floating to other units occurs infrequently, primarily for support roles rather than patient care. Professional scrubs are required, and orientation consists of three days focusing on department training and unit-specific practices.
