Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical / Surgical
Job Summary
The Registered Nurse is a clinical practitioner responsible for coordinating and implementing patient care tailored to the specific age groups of the patient population on the assigned units. Ensuring quality care is provided efficiently and safely is paramount, adhering to the unit's standards. The role involves demonstrating effective work habits and clinical practices while treating all stakeholders, including staff, physicians, patients, and families, with respect and consideration.
Responsibilities
- Conducts initial assessments and establishes care priorities based on patient age, symptoms, and psychosocial needs.
- Systematically re-assesses patients to identify progress and trends requiring intervention.
- Develops and implements individualized care plans, within the established time frames, based on Nursing Standards of Care.
- Makes comprehensive nursing decisions through the interpretation of facts and evaluation of patient outcomes; modifies care plans as needed.
- Participates in health education and discharge planning for patients and their significant others.
- Implements and documents appropriate interventions in a timely manner.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of implemented care plans.
- Performs various Point of Care testing procedures.
Staff Responsibilities
- Employs effective communication strategies to achieve intended outcomes.
- Delegates unit work assignments to ensure completion of required patient care support activities.
- Coordinates team assignments and adjusts based on patient and unit needs; follows up on delegated tasks to ensure quality and completeness.
- Utilizes the appropriate chain of command for issue resolution.
- Participates in the orientation of new staff and students on the unit.
- Functions as a resource for visitors, physicians, and staff, demonstrating courteousness and professionalism.
- Promotes a positive work environment through supportive attitudes and receptiveness to new ideas.
- Contributes to the unit's growth and development by enhancing organizational performance.
- Collaborates with others to achieve unit and organizational goals.
Customer Relations
- Exhibits behaviors leading to high levels of patient and customer satisfaction, respect for patients' rights, needs, and confidentiality.
- Demonstrates effective communication and human relations skills, promoting teamwork and harmony.

Qualifications
Education
Graduate of an accredited program for Registered Nursing.
Certification/Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse license in the state of employment or a valid Compact state license.
- BLS Certification is required.
Skills
- Current knowledge and skills relevant to the age and type of patient population served.
- Understanding of and sensitivity to patients’ rights in the delivery of care.
- Clear and concise communication skills appropriate to the developmental age of patients.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position requiring night shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM. Weekend shifts, approximately 2 to 4 per month, will be rotated among staff.
Patient Care Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse will float as necessary across all Medical/Surgical departments as dictated by departmental needs.
