Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical-Surgical Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1-2 years in an acute care setting License: Active Registered Nurse license Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Ostomy care experience IV skills Experience in admissions and discharges Ability to manage drips for heparin, insulin, Cardizem, and Amiodarone Description: This position is in a Level III Trauma Center. It includes a Level III NICU and is recognized for Magnet Designation. The facility has 933 beds in total. Working on a Medical-Surgical unit, you will care for patients with conditions such as chest pain, congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and post-cardiac interventions. Patients may also include those with cellulitis and acute kidney injury. The average patient stay is 36 hours, and you will be expected to admit and discharge 2-3 patients daily. Patient ratios are as follows: During the day, the ratio is 1 nurse to 4-5 patients. At night, the ratio is 1 nurse to 6-8 patients. Tech support during the day is 1 tech to 5 patients and at night, 1 tech to 9 patients. Required skills include basic Medical-Surgical nursing practices. Experience in an observation unit is preferred. Most patients are ambulatory, and the unit rarely has surgical patients. You will have support from a charge nurse, who takes a lighter patient assignment. There is a unit secretary available 24/7, as well as a hospitalist and respiratory therapist on-site around the clock. Centralized telemetry monitoring is provided by a tech available 24/7. Phlebotomy support is available for peripheral blood draws. You will be using an electronic medical record system for charting, with specific equipment such as EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis, and GE monitors. Float considerations may include Medical-Surgical units and emergency department holding with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio. Scheduling involves a weekend rotation every other week. The schedule is created six weeks in advance, with notifications sent two weeks prior to its start. Requests for time off can be approved up to 7 days, with additional days requiring special arrangements. There is no on-call requirement. A fatigue policy is in place, limiting staff to no more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts. Holiday expectations include working one holiday per season, which may include events such as Christmas or New Year's. Scrub color can be any, except for camouflage or denim. Documentation of pain levels is required before and after administering pain medication. The pain score documented must comply with the medication ordered.
