Description: The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The RN creates a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. The RN honors patients' minds, bodies, and spirits by respecting human dignity and the uniqueness of everyone. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research as well as hospital policies and procedures, regulatory standards, and professional guidelines. Clinical decision-making incorporates all four phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through helping relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. The Registered Nurse is an exemplar for compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy in honoring nursing as a distinct discipline. As a clinical nurse, this individual spends the majority of their time coordinating, ensuring, and providing direct patient care activities on the unit. This includes provision of nursing rounds, assessments, and treatments. The RN facilitates admission, transfer, and discharge activities. The RN provides patient and family-centered education and care coordination as applicable. The Registered Nurse performs and documents a comprehensive assessment in accordance with the RN's scope of practice and hospital policies/procedures. The RN considers the patient's culture, age, and developmental level. The RN coordinates the initiation of the patient database. Identifying patient risk factors and presenting complaints is a crucial responsibility. The RN obtains patient health information from family or others as necessary. They collect objective/quantitative and subjective/qualitative data. The RN verifies the initial admission assessment if obtained by other members of the healthcare team. They develop a problem list, prioritizing patient needs based on input from the inter-professional team as appropriate. The RN designs actions and interventions relevant to the patient's culture and age. In coordination with the patient and family, the RN determines desired outcomes in accordance with the medical plan of care. The RN fully implements patient care therapies and procedures with empowerment and clinical autonomy within the scope of practice. They explain procedures, treatments, and processes to patients and families. The RN initiates action to alleviate the patient’s stress and discomfort and recognizes, responds to, and communicates changes in patient condition appropriately. The RN conducts and documents ongoing comprehensive patient assessment and response to procedures and therapies. They revise and coordinate the plan of care and clinical pathway based on patient and family response and outcomes. The RN mentors other staff members and nursing students and facilitates orientation of new staff. They act as a role model and resource to others in the clinical role. The RN demonstrates support of unit/house-wide professional governance and staff empowerment activities. Active participation in unit-based activities in support of organizational values/priorities is expected. Promoting a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions is essential. The RN assures nursing excellence in accordance with accepted standards, evidence-based practice, current research, and a caring philosophy. The RN actively participates in department and/or unit quality improvement activities and core measures. Using a holistic perspective regarding patient care is important. Demonstrating critical thinking and creativity in handling patient issues is required. Attending all required safety training programs and being able to describe responsibilities related to safety and patient safety goals is necessary. The Registered Nurse displays compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy in relation to others. Ensuring positive customer relations through caring behaviors is vital. The RN uses sensitivity in managing difficult or emotional situations and responds promptly and courteously to customer requests
