Description: The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The RN creates a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research as well as policies and procedures. Clinical decision-making incorporates all four phases of the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. The Registered Nurse is an exemplar for compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy. As a clinical nurse, this individual spends most of their time coordinating, ensuring, and providing direct patient care. This includes nursing rounds, assessments, and treatments. The RN facilitates admission, transfer, and discharge activities. The Registered Nurse provides patient and family-centered education. Care coordination and individualized treatment planning are also part of the role. Key Responsibilities: Performs and documents a comprehensive assessment in accordance with RN scope of practice and policies. Considers the patient’s culture, age, and developmental level. Coordinates the initiation of the patient database. Identifies patient risk factors and presenting complaints. Obtains patient health information from family or others as necessary. Collects objective and subjective data. Develops a problem list, prioritizing patient needs based on input from the inter-professional team. Determines desired outcomes in coordination with the patient and family. Fully implements patient care therapies and procedures within scope of practice. Communicates changes in patient condition appropriately. Conducts and documents ongoing comprehensive assessments and responses to therapies. Revises and coordinates the plan of care based on patient and family responses. Mentors other staff members and nursing students. Acts as a role model and resource to others in a clinical role. Promotes a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions. Participates in department and unit quality improvement activities. Uses a holistic perspective regarding patient care. Demonstrates critical thinking and creativity in handling patient issues. Attends all required safety training programs and describes responsibilities related to safety. Displays compassion, acceptance, respect, and empathy towards others. Ensures positive customer relations through caring behaviors. Responds promptly and courteously to customer requests. Sets priorities for care of multiple patients and coordinates the plan of care. Organizes workload effectively relative to patient acuity and care processes. Delegates tasks appropriately and monitors accuracy and completeness of care provided by team members. Identifies educational needs of patients related to prioritized problems. Facilitates the patient discharge process by executing discharge orders in a timely manner. Provides input into patient/nurse assignments in consideration of available staffing and patient acuity. Education: Required Education: ADN or ASN Preferred Education: BSN
