Job Title: Registered Nurse PACU Profession: Nursing Specialty: Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Duration: 8 weeks Shift: Monday - Friday Hours per Shift: 8 hours Experience: Minimum two (2) years of Critical Care nursing experience License: Current NY State RN License Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS), ACLS, PALS Must-Have: - Management of clinical skills in the provision of nursing care. - Identification of symptoms and management of the disease entity. - Administration of medications and monitoring surgical sites. - Maintaining and intervening to improve respiratory and circulatory function. - Critical thinking in assessment and interventions. Description: The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating all nursing care as defined by the Nursing Practice Act. The peri-anesthesia patient is systematically assessed. A comprehensive plan of care is developed, individualized, and implemented to achieve optimal patient outcomes through the peri-anesthesia continuum. The PACU Registered Professional Nurse focuses on providing post-anesthesia care to the patient in the immediate post-anesthesia period. They facilitate the transition to Phase II level of care, the inpatient unit, or ICU for continued care. Collaboration with care providers and other members of the healthcare team is essential in response to patient and family needs. Responsibilities include: Providing nursing care to all immediate post-anesthesia and post-procedure patients. Assessing patients' physical, social, behavioral, and mental status through direct observation and medical record review. Performing initial physical assessments upon admission to the PACU and conducting ongoing assessments. Documenting relevant data and comparing all assessment data to established norms. Determining patient outcomes based on health problems and surgical procedures. The nurse will develop an individualized plan of care to assist the patient in returning to safe physiological levels after anesthesia. Identifying and addressing needs based on acute medical/surgical diagnoses and presenting symptoms is required. They will also assess patient education and learning needs and make appropriate referrals to other disciplines. The nurse will utilize infection control procedures and protocols. Providing health teaching and medication instructions to patients and their families is expected. Competency in performing procedures within the scope of practice is necessary. The nurse acts as a patient advocate and evaluates patient responses to treatment and care interventions. Data collection and documentation are crucial for assessing patient status for discharge and ensuring discharge criteria are met. The nurse reinforces and validates all patient education performed.
