Position Summary

The Underground Utilities Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and timely execution of underground utility construction activities on heavy civil projects. This role leads field crews and subcontractors, coordinates manpower, equipment, materials, and work schedules, and ensures construction activities meet project plans, specifications, quality standards, budget, and schedule requirements. The Superintendent works closely with project Managers, Field Engineers, utility agencies, vendors, and other project stakeholders to resolve issues, maintain production, identify potential risks, and keep work progressing safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise underground utility work, including water, sewer, storm drain, and related infrastructure.
  • Plan work methods, manpower, materials, equipment, and schedules to meet project production goals, budget, and milestones.
  • Review plans, specifications, and project requirements; provide technical direction to crews and resolve field issues.
  • Direct and coordinate foreman, craft employees, subcontractors, equipment operators, and field personnel to maintain efficient production.
  • Develop and update daily and weekly work plans based on project progress, field conditions, and schedule requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers, field engineers, equipment teams, vendors, utility companies, and other contractors to support project execution.
  • Forecast upcoming work and identify potential production, scheduling, material, equipment, or constructability issues; recommend solutions and adjustments.
  • Oversee installation, replacement, and repair of underground utilities, including pipelines, sewer lines, storm drains, water mains, services, structures, and related appurtenances.
  • Ensure proper construction methods, material quantities, equipment utilization, and quality standards are maintained throughout the work.
  • Monitor subcontractor performance and coordinate their activities to meet project schedule, production, and quality expectations.
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and project-specific safety procedures; identify training needs and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Conduct and document daily field activities, production progress, inspections, meetings, and other required project documentation.
  • Inspect work before, during, and after construction to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, quality standards, and project requirements.
  • Identify and communicate project risks, changes, and field conditions to project management and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with project teams, subcontractors, vendors, utility agencies, inspectors, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience, including 5+ years in a superintendent or foreman leadership role with extensive underground utility experience.
  • Proven experience with underground utility construction, including water, sewer, storm drain, pipelines, conduit, and related infrastructure.
  • Experience on large-scale civil or public works projects, with the ability to coordinate with owners, inspectors, utility agencies, and other project stakeholders.
  • Strong knowledge of utility construction methods, trenching and shoring, site safety, and applicable Cal/OSHA and MUTCD requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction plans, specifications, contract documents, and geotechnical information.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead crews and subcontractors while coordinating manpower, equipment, materials, schedules, and production.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and train field personnel.
  • Experience with project scheduling, budgeting, change management, and identifying potential construction equipment and familiarity with GPS/laser grading systems and pipe-laying equipment.
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license

Compensation: The base salary rate being offered for this position is USD $180,000.00 per year to USD $220,000.00 per year. Please note that the salary range listed is specific to the role listed in California. Salary rates may vary for different individuals in the same role based on various factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, and performance.
