The Role
Full-time, hospital-based, and designed for a veterinarian who enjoys both leadership and clinical practice. The Area Chief of Staff leads medical quality and team development across a small group of local general practices while remaining active on the floor.
- Lead, coach, and retain associate veterinarians; build an inclusive, high-engagement culture
- Partner with practice managers to guide daily operations and elevate team performance
- Provide direct patient care each week, including general practice appointments, routine surgery, and dentistry
- Validate clinical standards through medical record reviews, case coaching, audits, and patient safety initiatives
- Ensure regulatory compliance, including controlled substances management and radiation safety; serve as Responsible Veterinarian for permits as required
- Oversee onboarding and mentorship for newly hired veterinarians; support development of surgical and dental skills
- Recruit veterinary talent and provide meaningful hospital experiences for students and candidates
- Track and drive key operational and medical quality metrics; create action plans to achieve goals
- Champion timely access to care and a strong client experience; resolve escalated medical concerns
- Manage medical equipment inventory and requests; plan for future needs
- Build succession plans and develop emerging leaders across assigned locations

Requirements
- DVM or VMD degree from an accredited institution
- License to practice in Illinois (or eligibility to obtain prior to start)
- DEA registration and Illinois controlled substance license eligibility
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Proficiency in general medicine, routine surgery, and dentistry
- Prior leadership, mentoring, or multi-site experience strongly preferred
- Exceptional communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable with digital medical records and standard veterinary software
