Description

Veterinary Practice Manager

Hamburg Veterinary Clinic — Hamburg, NJ

Hamburg Veterinary Clinic has a lot going for it: a long history in the community, a dedicated team, several veterinarians, a strong reputation, and a hospital that has recently seen some meaningful investment, including renovations and a move to paperless medical records.

What we need now is the right leader to help bring it all together.

We’re looking for an experienced Veterinary Practice Manager who is confident enough to lead a well-established team, approachable enough to earn their trust, and steady enough to navigate the occasional strong opinion without getting pulled into the weeds.

This isn’t a role for someone who needs everyone to agree with them before they can make a decision. It’s also not a role for someone who believes good management means coming in with a hammer and changing everything on day one.

We’re looking for the middle ground: a confident, thoughtful leader who can set expectations, have difficult conversations when needed, listen to the team, and ultimately make the call.

What You'll Be Doing

As Practice Manager, you’ll work closely with the Medical Director and hospital team to create consistency, improve communication, develop staff, and keep the practice moving forward.

You’ll oversee a team of approximately 15+ people and will have a meaningful role in how the hospital operates day to day. That includes staffing, scheduling, workflow, purchasing, facility needs, compliance, budgeting, performance management, and all the other wonderfully unpredictable things that come with running a veterinary hospital.

You’ll also help strengthen the hospital’s Urgent Care services and look for opportunities to grow the practice and its connection with the local community. Marketing, client experience, team development, and business performance will all be part of the picture.

But the biggest part of the job is leadership.

We need someone who can walk into an established team and say, “I hear you,” without automatically saying, “Sure, we'll do it your way.”

Someone who can recognize when a team member has a valid concern, while also recognizing when a decision needs to be made.

Someone who can address performance issues instead of hoping they'll magically disappear.

And someone who can be kind, fair, and approachable while still being willing to say, “This is the expectation, and this is what needs to happen.”

Basically, we need someone who can lead the room without needing to dominate it.

The Person We're Looking For

You’ll ideally have at least three years of veterinary management experience, along with a good understanding of the pace, personalities, and priorities that make veterinary medicine its own special flavor of chaos.

More importantly, we’re looking for someone who has leadership presence.

You’re comfortable making decisions and standing behind them. You can have a difficult conversation without turning it into a confrontation. You don't avoid conflict, but you also don't go looking for it.

You know how to listen without losing your authority, and you understand that being approachable and being a pushover are two very different things.

You’ll also bring:

  • Experience leading, coaching, and developing a veterinary team
  • The ability to establish clear expectations and hold people accountable
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good judgment and the confidence to make decisions
  • Organization and follow-through
  • An understanding of veterinary practice operations and financial performance
  • Comfort with budgets, revenue, KPIs, and operational goals
  • A willingness to address problems directly and constructively
  • An interest in practice growth, marketing, and community engagement

A technician background or CVPM is a plus, but not required. SHRM-CP, BS, MBA, or other advanced education is also welcome.

Why Hamburg Veterinary Clinic?

Hamburg Veterinary Clinic has been caring for pets in the Hamburg and Sussex County community for more than 40 years. There’s a solid foundation here, and we’re not looking for someone to reinvent the hospital just for the sake of reinventing it.

We’re looking for someone who can recognize what’s working, identify what needs attention, and help the team move forward.

Recent renovations and the transition to paperless medical records are part of that investment. There are also opportunities to continue improving workflows, strengthen team communication, develop staff, and grow the hospital’s Urgent Care services.

You’ll have support from UVC’s Learning & Development team, CVPM resources and mentorship, and opportunities to grow into area and regional leadership roles.

Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference in how this hospital functions and how the team works together.

If you’re a leader who can befirm without being forceful, approachable without being passive, and confident without needing to be the loudest person in the room, we’d like to meet you.
