Veterinary Technician 2

About This Role:The Veterinary Technician 2 supports the execution of preclinical research studies by monitoring health status surveillance for animals; serves as liaison to the Veterinarian in providing healthcare to the animals; administers daily treatments and medications for animals as instructed or required; assists in or provides routine and emergency medical treatment to animals. This role is heavily focused on anesthesia induction and intra-operative care of surgical models.

What You'll Do

Administers pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative medications and assists with special treatments and medications to animals as instructed, prescribed, and/or required.Manages the pre- and post-operative care of surgical models.Utilizes anesthetic monitoring equipment to closely monitor live animal models before, during, and after anesthesia administration. Ensures vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ECG, and temperature are within set parametersMaintains accurate and detailed anesthesia records, documenting medications administered, vital signs, observations, and any complications during anesthesiaMonitors animal recovery and administers post-procedure medicationsPerforms routing diagnostic laboratory procedures (i.e., bloodwork, fecal exams, urinalyses, etc.). Collects and submits biological specimens to laboratories for analysisAssists with implementing activities to meet the behavioral and enrichment needs of animals including, but not limited to, behavioral assessments, socialization, operant training, and cage safety.Manages cleaning, stocking, and inventory schedule of veterinary areas.Manages laboratory/veterinary equipment maintenance and troubleshootingAssists with and performs humane euthanasia as needed or directed, in accordance with organization's procedures and veterinary professional regulatory guidelines.Assists with and performs necropsies, tissue collection, trimming and processingAudits records, reviews data, and assists with report writingPrepares and executes cadaver model proceduresProvides training on and operates imaging equipment as needed.Provides training, guidance, and support to new and junior technicians

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent2-4 years of relevant veterinary work experience.Good working knowledge of veterinary terminology and veterinary products and their uses

Good knowledge of medication calculations and common drips used for laboratory animalsGood understanding of safety protocols for clinical environment and animal careGood understanding of Operating Room etiquette and aseptic techniquesGood written and oral communication skillsGood attention to detail and strong observation skillsAbility to operate complex medical and research equipment, including gas anesthesia systems and ventilatorsAbility to execute medical orders and research protocol instructions with no supervisionAbility to safely handle and properly restrain laboratory animalsStrong ability to communicate animal needs to staff effectivelyAbility to administer routine and emergency treatments and medicationsAbility to administer and maintain general anesthesia in an operating room environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with large animal models such as swine, sheep, etc.AALAS Certification at the LAT level or higher and/or RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician)

Location

This is a fully onsite position in Atlanta, GA that may require work after hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
