The Wastewater & Facility Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining environmental compliance under facility discharge permits while executing mechanical, electrical, and facility upkeep. This dual-focus role oversees daily wastewater treatment operations, hazardous waste handling, and chemical inventory, while also performing preventative and reactive maintenance on critical plant infrastructure—including pumps, motors, boilers, piping, and electrical systems.

Position Responsibilities

Wastewater Operations & Compliance

  • Treat industrial wastewater daily to ensure operational capacity for tank wash operations and incoming customer water.
  • Monitor incoming wastewater streams through the waste program to detect anomalies, pinpoint process issues, and maintain optimal treatment chemistry.
  • Ensure absolute regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal environmental discharge permits and standards.
  • Monitor and manage sludge accumulation across all storage tanks; assist the Facility Manager with residual waste management and chemical inventory tracking.
  • Handle hazardous waste in strict adherence to regulations, including designated storage protocols, labeling, and hazardous material manifests.
  • Maintain accurate customer manifest files and collaborate with the Customer Service Coordinator to ensure accurate invoicing.
  • Maintain Hazard Communication compliance within the tank wash and wastewater treatment areas, keeping all operational spaces clean, organized, and safe.
  • Maintain annual RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) certification and training standards.

Facility & Mechanical Maintenance

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on plant equipment, including motors, motor controls, pumps, and air compressors.
  • Service and maintain boiler units, safely inspecting, repairing, or replacing associated piping, steam lines, and valves.
  • Apply knowledge of steam distribution systems through associated piping to ensure product temperatures meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Assist with electrical troubleshooting, installation, and repairs on both low- and high-voltage systems (120/240V and 277/480V).
  • Perform general building and grounds maintenance, structural repairs, and basic welding as required.
  • Support site operations by diagnosing mechanical malfunctions, completing work orders promptly, and performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Wastewater Experience: 1–2 years of hands-on experience operating and treating wastewater in an industrial or commercial setting.
  • Licensing & Certifications:
    • Active state Wastewater Operator license (or the ability to obtain/maintain one per state regulatory requirements).
    • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
    • Current RCRA certification or the ability to complete and maintain annual RCRA training.
  • Mechanical & Electrical Aptitude:
    • Proven experience in general maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting.
    • Practical knowledge of electrical work across high and low voltages (120/240V and 277/480V).
    • Exposure to multiple skilled trades (mechanical, electrical, piping, or welding).
    • Familiarity with or willingness to learn boiler operations and steam transfer systems.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver a minimum of 75 lbs regularly, work in varied industrial conditions (heat, cold, noise), and safely navigate tank wash and mechanical areas.
