    About this position: Wastewater Plant Operator in Twentynine Palms, CA

    Wage/Salary Range: $39.66 – $55.00  per hr.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    • Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant equipment, pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and related systems.
    • Conduct routine inspections of plant facilities and equipment to ensure proper operation.
    • Monitor flow rates, chemical levels, treatment processes, and system performance through computerized control systems and manual observations.
    • Collect wastewater samples and perform laboratory testing as required.
    • Record operational data, maintenance activities, and laboratory results accurately and timely.
    • Adjust treatment processes and chemical feed systems to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
    • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on plant equipment and facilities.
    • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and report issues requiring major repairs.
    • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
    • Respond to alarms, emergencies, spills, equipment failures, and adverse weather conditions.
    • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Assist with facility improvement projects and inspections by regulatory agencies.
    • Participate in on-call rotations, shift work, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

     

    Required (Minimum Necessary) Qualifications

    • Education Requirements: High Scholl Diploma or GED
    • Level of Experience Requirements: At least 1 year of prior experience
    • California Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification. Grades 2-4.
    • Possession of a CA valid driver's license.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain required wastewater treatment operator certifications.

     

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

    • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Basic knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and operational systems.
    • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and maintain accurate records.
    • Knowledge of organizational procedures and workflows – understanding how work moves through a company.
    • Basic knowledge of relevant technologies or tools – e.g., Microsoft 365, communication platforms, or industry‑standard software.
    • Knowledge of customer service practices – principles of providing quality service and managing inquiries professionally.
    • Knowledge of data privacy and confidentiality principles – awareness of proper handling of sensitive information.
    • Communication skills (written and verbal) – ability to convey information clearly and professionally.
    • Time management and prioritization – balancing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
    • Problem‑solving and critical thinking – analyzing issues and selecting appropriate solutions.
    • Interpersonal and teamwork skills – building rapport and collaborating effectively with others.
    • Attention to detail – producing accurate, error‑free work.

     

    Preferred

    • Previous experience in wastewater treatment, utilities, industrial operations, or related field.
    • Knowledge of environmental regulations and wastewater treatment processes.
    • Experience using SCADA or computerized monitoring systems.

     

    Necessary Physical Requirements

    • Ability to walk, stand, climb ladders, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces and around wastewater treatment equipment.
    • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
    • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

     

     

    Work Environment

    • Exposure to chemicals, wastewater, odors, noise, and moving machinery.
    • Work may involve shift schedules, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • This position will not have supervisory responsibilities.

    DOT Covered/Safety-Sensitive Role Requirements

    • This position is not subject to federal requirements regarding Department of Transportation “safety-sensitive” functions.

    Additional Qualifying Factors

    As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and have acceptable background check results. If applicable to the contract, you must also obtain and maintain the appropriate clearance levels required and must also be able to obtain access to military installations.
