    Duties

This WCC Crew Supervisor 1 position provides a meaningful opportunity to lead, mentor, and develop corps members who participate in a Washington Conservation Corps field crew. Field crews complete critical environmental restoration, conservation, and disaster response work across Washington State. In this role, you will guide a team of young adults as AmeriCorps members through hands-on natural resource projects, ensuring their safety, supporting their professional growth, and fostering an inclusive and high performing team culture. You will represent Ecology and WCC in daily interactions with project partners and community partners while coordinating restoration project plans, monitoring progress, and delivering high-quality environmental outcomes.

You will serve as the primary onsite leader for field operations-planning and assigning project tasks, troubleshooting issues, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and managing tools, equipment, and project materials. The position has the opportunity to play a key role in WCC's emergency response capacity, deploying to wildfires, floods, landslides, and other natural disasters as needed and serving in roles that support response operations and community recovery.

As a WCC Crew Supervisor, you support member recruitment, conduct performance evaluations, and help members access career development resources, contributing to WCC's mission of environmental stewardship and workforce development.

    What you will do:

    • Lead, supervise, and mentor a crew of AmeriCorps members through daily field-based natural resource projects, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and productive team environment.
    • Plan, assign, and coordinate project tasks in partnership with project partners and WCC staff, ensuring work meets project specifications, timelines, and quality expectations.
    • Train crew members in the safe operation of tools, equipment, and field techniques used in restoration activities such as trail construction, habitat enhancement, invasive species control, riparian planting, and biological monitoring.
    • Conduct on-site safety assessments, develop safety plans, implement risk-mitigation measures, and ensure adherence to WCC and agency safety policies and procedures.
    • Serve as the primary onsite WCC representative in communications with project sponsors, land managers, partner agencies, and the public, providing updates on project progress and resolving field issues as needed.
    • Communicate clearly and consistently with corps members, project partners, Ecology staff and prospective members, project partners and the general public.
    • Recruit, interview, and select crew members; conduct performance evaluations; support member development; and recommend disciplinary actions when necessary.
    • Complete required administrative documentation, such as time sheets, travel logs, safety reports, project production records, enrollment paperwork, and equipment inventories with accuracy and timeliness.
    • Respond to disasters such as wildfires, floods, landslides, and hazardous material incidents, which may require extended travel, deployment to temporary duty stations, and participation in activities such as debris removal, fire camp operations, damage assessments, or spill cleanup.
    • Maintain project tools, vehicles, and equipment; ensure they are operated safely; and coordinate repairs or replacements when needed.
    • Support WCC's mission by fostering member growth, promoting participation in trainings and service-learning opportunities, and creating a positive and supportive crew experience.

    Working Conditions:

    • This position often requires working in inclement weather, navigating rough terrain and wilderness areas, walking several miles per day, working on steep inclines and variable terrain, and lifting up to 60 pounds repetitively for extended periods of time.
    • This position may require overnight travel to accomplish assignments, consecutive days of work up to eight (8) days in travel status, work in excess of 40 hours per week, or deployment to natural disaster areas in an emergency response capacity for up to 30 consecutive days.
