Nature of Work
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to complete welding projects throughout the City of Montgomery. The work responsibilities include completing welding projects, including building, installing, and repairing fences, overseeing and coordinating the daily activities of assigned crew members, and performing administrative duties. Work is performed with considerable independent judgement. Welders in the Street Maintenance Department are supervised by the Maintenance Supervisor, Street Maintenance Superintendent, or Maintenance Department Director. Welders in the Parks and Recreation Department are supervised by the District Parks Maintenance Supervisor. Welders in the Leisure Services Department are supervised by the Parks and Recreation Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years of experience performing welding tasks. Must possess a Welderâs certification. Â
NOTE:Â Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Special Requirements
Must obtain a Welderâs certification. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Alabama driverâs license and possess an insurable driving record to operate city vehicles. Availability to be on call 24 hours with the flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed for special emergencies and/or special events.
WORKING CONDITIONS:Â Work primarily takes place in an outdoor setting, with frequent exposure to loud noise, dirt, dust, fumes, and adverse weather conditions, such as rain, extreme heat, and cold.
Kind of Examination
Applications are being accepted to fill two (2) vacancies and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Parks and Recreation Department. Applicants will be screened and qualified based upon education and experience as shown on the application and supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and the supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If more than six qualified applications are received, the supplemental questionnaire will be used to rank applicants. Tied scores will not be broken. If there are six or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
