LHH is working with a well-known company seeking an experienced Workers Compensation Attorney to join its legal team on a remote contract basis. This role is fully remote, however candidates must reside in California and hold an active California bar license. This role would be 60 to 90 days contract role with possibility of extension. They ideally would like the attorney to have experience in Workers Compensation, defense. The attorney would need to reside and be barred in California.
Position Overview
As Staff Counsel, you will represent the company and its policyholders in workers compensation matters involving moderate exposure and complexity. This role requires strong technical skills, sound judgment, and a solid working knowledge of California workers compensation law.
Responsibilities
Develop and revise case strategy using established litigation protocols
Handle all aspects of litigation, including discovery, hearings, trials, depositions, mediations, and arbitrations
Research and apply relevant law; draft legal documents such as pleadings, motions, briefs, and legal opinions
Conduct settlement negotiations when requested
Communicate and collaborate with Claims Representatives and insured clients, providing clear and practical legal guidance
Maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external partners
Stay current on legal developments and relevant medical or technical issues impacting workers compensation cases
Leverage technology to improve efficiency, quality, and cost effectiveness
Serve as a team or group leader when assigned
Interface with the Home Office Legal department as needed
Qualifications
Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent and active admission to the California Bar (required)
Minimum of 1 year of experience practicing as an attorney
Strong knowledge of California workers compensation law
General understanding of insurance law and claims operations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to manage cases independently and handle matters appropriate to experience level
Must reside in California
Details:
Duration: 6-month contract with possible extension (reviewed every 6090 days)
Location: Remote (California residency required)
Contract-to-Hire: Possible for the right fit
Competitive Pay: $55$60/hour DOE.
