Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent this position performs operational maintenance and repair work in the wastewater treatment plant and wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification operate plant equipment perform routine testing and maintenance and assist with collection system operations to ensure compliance with operational and regulatory requirements.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment random reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing for the following prohibited substances marijuana amphetamines opioids phencyclidine PCP and cocaine as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Typical Duties · Monitors and regulates the rate of flow of raw sewage into the plant and between treatment processes under direction of higher-level operators. · Reads and records meters gauges and flow charts and maintains daily operational logs. · Operates cleans and maintains wastewater treatment plant equipment including pumps screens grit chambers aerators compressors and related machinery. · Collects scheduled laboratory samples from designated plant locations. · Assists with calibration of dissolved oxygen and pH meters and performs routine laboratory tests including suspended solids chlorine residuals dissolved oxygen pH and other related tests. · Performs preventive maintenance tasks including lubricating equipment repacking pumps and maintaining motors and mechanical components. · Assists with overhaul and repair of plant and collection system equipment. · Performs custodial duties including cleaning plant buildings equipment and work areas. · Assists with maintenance of wastewater treatment plant grounds landscaping and farm operations. · Excavates around sewer lines using hand tools or equipment to locate and expose problem areas. · Assists with repair or replacement of sewer line sections and installation of new sewer lines. · Builds raises or adjusts manhole structures as required. · Clears sewer blockages manually or by using high-pressure sewer cleaning equipment. · May operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks front-end loaders and backhoes as assigned. · Performs preventive maintenance on the wastewater collection system including flushing sewer lines. · Attends training programs safety meetings and seminars related to wastewater treatment operations and maintenance. · Serves in after-hours weekend and emergency call-back rotations with other wastewater division staff. · Performs duties assigned to lower-level operators when necessary to maintain operational compliance.
Minimum Qualifications · High School Diploma or GED equivalent. · At least one 1 year of experience in wastewater treatment operations utilities maintenance or related field.
Licenses and Certificates · Must possess or be able to obtain within twelve 12 months or the next available testing date a New Mexico Level I Wastewater Operator Certification. · Must possess or be able to obtain a valid New Mexico Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements within three 3 months of employment.
Physical Requirements · Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing walking balancing bending stooping crouching kneeling and squatting. · Must be able to push pull and lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds. · Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment tools and vehicles used in wastewater treatment operations.
Working Conditions · Regular attendance is an essential function of this position to ensure continuity of services. · Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions. · Employee may be exposed to airborne particles wastewater potentially toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme temperatures. · Work may involve travel from site to site and working around traffic heavy equipment and construction environments. · Use of personal protective equipment including safety shoes gloves and eye protection is required. · Due to environmental regulations and operational requirements of the facility required certifications must be obtained and maintained to continue employment.
