Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent or designated supervisor this position performs highly skilled work in the operation maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment plant and wastewater collection system. Employees in this classification serve as senior operators responsible for monitoring treatment processes ensuring regulatory compliance and providing technical guidance to lower-level operators. The Operator IV may coordinate daily operational activities and assist supervisors with planning and operational oversight.
This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment random reasonable suspicion and post-accident testing for the following prohibited substances marijuana amphetamines opioids phencyclidine PCP and cocaine as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Typical Duties
· Monitors and regulates wastewater treatment plant processes to ensure proper treatment and regulatory compliance.
· Reads meters gauges and instrumentation to monitor treatment operations and records operational data.
· Performs advanced laboratory testing including biochemical oxygen demand BOD suspended solids dissolved oxygen pH temperature fecal coliform and other required analyses.
· Maintains accurate operational records laboratory reports and regulatory documentation.
· Operates and maintains plant equipment including pumps aerators compressors motors clarifiers rotating bridges and related machinery.
· Performs preventive maintenance on plant equipment and collection system infrastructure.
· Assists with troubleshooting plant process problems and mechanical equipment issues.
· Assists supervisors in coordinating daily operational activities and work assignments.
· Provides training and technical guidance to trainee and junior operators.
· Assists in maintaining compliance with applicable state and federal wastewater treatment regulations and permit requirements.
· Participates in maintenance and repair activities involving wastewater treatment plant facilities and wastewater collection systems.
· Assists with maintenance of plant grounds buildings and equipment.
· Attends training programs safety meetings and seminars related to wastewater treatment operations and regulatory compliance.
· Performs duties assigned to lower-level operators when necessary to maintain operational compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
· High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
· Minimum of four 4 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations or related utility operations.
Licenses and Certificates
· Must possess or be able to obtain within twelve 12 months or the next available testing date a New Mexico Level IV Wastewater Operator Certification.
· Must possess a valid New Mexico Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.
Physical Requirements
· Moderately heavy work involving frequent standing walking balancing bending stooping crouching kneeling and squatting.
· Must be able to push pull and lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
· Must possess sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment tools and vehicles used in wastewater treatment operations.
Working Conditions
· Regular attendance is an essential function of this position to ensure continuity of services.
· Essential duties are predominantly performed outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions.
· Employee may be exposed to airborne particles wastewater potentially toxic or caustic chemicals and extreme temperatures.
· Work may involve travel from site to site and working around traffic heavy equipment and construction environments.
· Use of personal protective equipment including safety shoes gloves eye protection and respiratory protection as required.
· Due to environmental regulations and operational requirements of the facility required certifications must be obtained and maintained to continue employment.
