Graduate Teaching Assistants are expected to: attend all required training, workshops, and orientations; teach in the Writing Center as assigned, performing all duties associated with university teaching, including assisting students, cooperating with the Writing Center director, and abiding by all Writing Center, department, and university policies; teach three-hour classes in English Composition as assigned, performing all duties associated with university teaching, including assisting students, cooperating with the basic course director, posting and holding office hours, and abiding by all course, department, and university policies; hold class during all scheduled meeting times, with exceptions approved by the composition coordinator; meet with supervisors as designated; maintain satisfactory progress toward degree and remain in good academic standing; take ENG 630: Materials and Methods of Research, ENG 560: Writing Center Theory, and ENG 640: Teaching College English; work with a designated teacher-mentor as assigned; If responsibilities are met satisfactorily, the graduate teaching assistantship may be renewed the following semester, subject to continued fulltime enrollment in the M.A. Applicants must also submit personal statements (one-two pages) that outlines: their interest in teaching at the college level; their background in writing, particularly in composition; any related courses or workshops that they have taken; their plans in regard to the teaching of writing; and their own related work and/or volunteer experience, particularly in teaching and/or tutoring.
