Art Teacher Jobs Overview

Do you wish you had more time for your art? Consider looking for art teacher jobs. As an art teacher, you can turn your passion into a career—and help to foster a love of visual expression in the next generation. Art teachers instruct students in art techniques and art history and help them create art projects. They inspire students to produce their best work while teaching them the essentials to do so.

You’ll enjoy teaching art if you’re creative, find working with children rewarding, and don’t mind being the center of attention in the classroom.

Art teachers usually work at public or private elementary, middle, or high schools. You can also find alternative art teaching jobs at hobby classes, such as for paint nights, local art stores, or preschool education, to supplement your income as an artist.

Education and Skills for Art Teacher Jobs

States set their own requirements for teachers, so you should decide where you want to teach before you plan your education. These are some common educational requirements for public schools:

  • Teachers in elementary and middle school usually need a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. You might specialize in the subject area of art or a grade level, like elementary school.
  • Teachers in high school usually need a master’s degree in art.
  • Instructors at higher education institutions usually hold a Ph.D. or a master’s degree either in education or art.

If you already have a college degree in a different major, look into alternative educational paths. Many states offer options that enable you to reduce the time and money needed to earn your degree.

After your education, which typically includes an internship teaching at a school, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

  • take a licensing exam
  • pass a background check
  • get fingerprints
  • apply for certification

If you want to try out the teaching profession first, you can become a teacher’s assistant and assist a licensed teacher in the classroom.

Private schools can set their own requirements for teachers, but you’ll usually still need a college degree to teach there. If you want to teach hobby art classes, you may not need a bachelor’s degree, but you often have to be an artist active in your field. You can learn more about common requirements in our job description for teachers.
