Cullman Internal Medicine is seeking a Medical Billing Specialist to join our team! The Billing Specialist is responsible for managing key components of the revenue cycle, including charge entry, payment posting, and accounts receivable (AR) follow-up, in addition to standard billing functions. This role ensures timely and accurate claim submission, payment reconciliation, and resolution of outstanding balances in compliance with payer guidelines and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities: <ul><li>Perform accurate and timely charge entry for professional services based on provider documentation and coding guidelines</li><li>Post insurance and patient payments, adjustments, and denials with a high degree of accuracy</li><li>Reconcile daily deposits and ensure alignment between posted payments and bank reports</li><li>Conduct AR follow-up on outstanding claims, including contacting insurance carriers to resolve unpaid or underpaid claims</li><li>Review and correct claim rejections and denials, identifying root causes and trends</li><li>Submit corrected claims and appeals as necessary, ensuring proper documentation is maintained</li><li>Verify patient insurance information and eligibility when needed to support billing accuracy</li><li>Work aging reports and prioritize accounts based on payer requirements and timely filing limits</li><li>Communicate effectively with payers, patients, and internal staff regarding billing issues</li><li>Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, including HIPAA and Alabama Medicaid policies</li><li>Assist with month-end closing processes and reporting as assigned</li><li>Collaborate with coding and clinical staff to resolve discrepancies in documentation or billing</li></ul>THIS POSITION IS FULLY ON-SITE IN CULLMAN, ALABAMA M-F 8-5  Qualifications: <ul><li>High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree/certficate in healthcare administration or related field preferred</li><li>Minimum of 2 years of medical billing experience, including charge entry, payment posting, and AR follow-up preferred</li><li>Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding principles</li><li>Familiarity with Medicare,  Alabama Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines</li><li>Experience with EMR/PM systems (e.g., eClinicalWorks, SystemedX, or similar)</li><li>Strong attention to detail and organizational skills</li><li>Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment</li></ul>Work Environment: <ul><li>Office-based healthcare setting in Cullman, Alabama</li><li>May require extended periods of sitting and computer use</li><li>Standard business hours with occasional overtime based on billing cycles</li></ul>

The Revenue Cycle Manager is responsible for the end-to-end revenue cycle for the multi-specialty internal medicine practice, including patient access, charge capture, coding oversight, billing, denials management, and collections across internal medicine, behavioral health, diabetic center, pulmonary, and sports medicine service lines. Analyze denial trends by payer, provider, and specialty; lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions, including provider education, front-end workflow changes, and edits within the practice management system.

This role provides strategic and hands-on leadership to optimize reimbursement, reduce denials, ensure compliance with payer and regulatory requirements, and support the financial health of the provider-owned practice.   ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: <ul><li>Oversee the full billing cycle from scheduling/registration and insurance verification through coding, billing, payment posting, denials, and patient collections for all specialties and locations.</li><li>Develop, implement, and maintain standardized revenue cycle policies, procedures, and workflows, with specialty-specific parameters for behavioral health, diabetic services, pulmonary diagnostics, and sports medicine procedures.</li><li>Monitor key performance indicators (e.g., days in A/R, denial and rejection rates, net collection rate, charge lag, no-response claims) and implement action plans to improve results.</li><li>Analyze denial trends by payer, provider, and specialty; lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions, including provider education, front-end workflow changes, and edits within the practice management system. </li><li>Oversee payer enrollment, EFT/ERA setup, and maintenance of fee schedules and contract terms in coordination with practice leadership.</li><li>Partner with practice administrator on payer contract review, reimbursement trends, and revenue forecasts; provide regular financial and operational reports and recommendations.</li><li>Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer billing regulations, as well as internal compliance policies; support internal and external audits and respond to record requests.</li><li>Evaluate and optimize use of the EHR/PM system and clearinghouse tools, including automation of claim edits, work queues, and reporting dashboards.</li><li>Lead or participate in revenue cycle–related projects such as new service line implementation, location expansions, payor changes, and system upgrades.</li><li>Monitor clearinghouse and payer rejections/denials for all lines of service; identify trends (e.g., prior auth, NCCI edits, behavioral health limitations) and implement process improvements.</li><li>Work closely with front office, referral/prior auth staff, and clinical teams to resolve registration, insurance, documentation, and coding issues impacting reimbursement.</li></ul> SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES <ul><li>Supervise billing staff (e.g., billing specialists, payment posters, A/R follow-up staff) across all specialties.</li><li>Assign and balance workloads to ensure timely billing and follow-up for internal medicine, behavioral health, diabetic center, pulmonary, and sports medicine services.</li><li> Monitor staff productivity and quality; provide regular feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations.</li><li>Participate in hiring, onboarding, and training of new billing staff with specialty-specific workflows and payer rules.</li><li> Promote a collaborative environment with clinical, front office, and management teams to support an efficient revenue cycle and positive patient experience.</li></ul>  SKILLS/ABILITIES: <ul><li>Strong leadership and staff development skills with the ability to mentor and hold staff accountable.</li><li>High attention to detail and strong organizational skills, including managing multiple specialties and locations.</li><li>Effective communication skills to work with providers, staff, patients, and external payers.</li><li>Analytical skills to interpret A/R and denial reports, identify trends by specialty, and recommend corrective actions.</li><li>Proficiency with spreadsheets and billing system reporting tools to track key metrics (e.g., denial reasons by specialty, days in A/R, credit balances).</li><li>Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and adapt to payer and regulatory changes.</li><li>Knowledge of computer programs and EHR Systems.</li></ul>  REQUIREMENTS:   <ul><li>CPC and CRC Certification preferred</li><li>Two to three years management experience</li><li>Five years billing experience including primary care billing</li><li>Experience with value-based care as well as ACO (Accountable Care Organization) preferred</li></ul>            WORKING CONDITIONS: <ul><li> Full-time role in a private multi-specialty internal medicine practice.</li><li> Office-based with extensive use of computers and phones.</li><li> Occasional extended hours during month-end, year-end, system changes, or audit periods.</li><li> Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.  </li><li> Manual dexterity is needed for using a calculator and computer keyboard.  </li><li> This description is intended to provide only basic guidelines for meeting job requirements.  Responsibilities, skills and working conditions   may change as needs evolve.</li></ul>    Cullman Internal Medicine, P.C. is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Overview:
Responsible for the collection of patient account balances. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending and stretching for files and supplies. Occasionally lifting files or paper weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, operate a calculator, telephone, copier and such other office equipment as necessary. Vision must be correctable to 20/20 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods and to work in an environment which can be very stressful. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with patients, physicians and staff. Contact may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Work may be stressful at times. Evening and Weekend work may be required. 

Responsibilities:
• Identifies delinquent accounts, aging period and payment sources. • Reviews each account by computer, reports and other information sources. • Performs collection actions including contacting patients by statement, telephone and letter for all current accounts as well as old company accounts. • Evaluates patient financial status and establishes budget payment plans. • Reviews accounts for possible assignment to collection agency, makes recommendations to Controller and prepares information for collection agency. • Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints. • Researches guarantor credit balances. • Assists in answering telephone, routing calls and providing requested information as needed. • Regularly reviews and acts on deceased and no statement accounts per office policy. • Assists in care and maintenance of department equipment. • Participates in educational activities and attends required meetings. • Maintains strictest confidentiality. • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:
Education Required • High School Diploma or GED required. Education Preferred License, Certification and/or Registration Experience • One year of collection experience.  Additional Skills/Abilities • Requires knowledge of medical billing/collection practices. • Knowledge of basic medical coding. • Knowledge of insurance agency operating procedures and practices. • Knowledge of governmental legal and regulatory provisions related to collection activities. • Skill with computer applications and use of calculator. • Ability in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public. • Ability to communicate clearly. • Ability to work independently. • Knowledge of the organizations policies and procedures. • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. • Upholds effective work habits including, but not limited to, regular attendance, teamwork, initiative, dependability, and promptness. • Some medical insurance background preferred.
