Join us at Brookside Gardens as a Seasonal Gardener Assistant and spend your season making a visible difference in one of MontgomeryCounty's most beloved public gardens. Brookside Gardens is seeking an energetic and reliable part-time Seasonal Gardener Assistant in Wheaton, MD to support daily gardening and landscape maintenance tasks throughout the growing season. The ideal candidate is energetic, enjoys spending time outdoors, interacting with people, and has an outstanding work ethic with great attention to detail. Applicants should have a basic knowledge of plants and experience using a variety of equipment for tasks like planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching. On the job training will be provided as necessary. This position will run from March 2026 – November 2026 with a working schedule of up to 32 hours per week. About the HFEE and Brookside Gardens The Horticulture, Forestry, and Environmental Education (HFEE) Division preserves and maintains our parks' natural and cultural resources. Brookside Gardens is one of our public gardens, showcasing horticultural exhibits designed and maintained using ecological landscape practices. Our public gardens offer a wide variety of educational programs for children and adults are planned to excite curiosity and encourage lifelong learning, with the vision of mobilizing residents of Montgomery County as dedicated stewards of the natural world. About Montgomery Parks The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a six-time National Recreational and Parks Association Gold Medal Award Winner. Behind the vast and diverse Montgomery County Department of Parks system is a career staff complement of nearly 800 employees, 415 parks and over 37,000 acres of park land that serves a diverse population of more than one million residents in the Washington, DC metro area. <h5>Examples of Important Duties </h5><ul><li>Assists Horticulture staff with all maintenance and planting tasks including bed preparation, mulching, and weeding. </li><li>Operates power equipment. </li><li>Uses a variety of hand tools for landscape maintenance. </li><li>Interacts with visitors in a friendly and helpful manner. </li><li>Assists in the supervision of volunteer groups. </li></ul><h5>Minimum Qualifications </h5><ul><li>Applicants must be at least 18 years or older. </li><li>Basic knowledge of plants. Experience using a variety of equipment for tasks including planting, pruning, weeding, and mulching. </li></ul><h5>Supplemental Information </h5>May be subject to medical, drug and alcohol testing. Working conditions: Primarily works outside. Exposed to weather, dirt, waste, odors, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (for example, bees, hornets, wasps, etc.). Must be able to bend, stoop, stretch, climb and lift up to 50 pounds. Major Job Responsibilities Field Operation <ul><li>Report to work on time.</li><li>Remove loose trash and debris from landscape area before mowing.</li><li>Remove weeds from sidewalks, curb lines, and mulch beds.</li><li>Report property damage to Foreman or Lead Person.</li><li>Help crew load and unload equipment at the job site.</li></ul>Client Relations<ul><li>Always be courteous.</li><li>Always wear a clean uniform.</li><li>Know what to do if a client or anyone else asks a question.</li><li>Learn to use the proper equipment for the job being performed.</li></ul>Equipment Use<ul><li>Become certified in the training/certification program for the designated pieces of equipment (21″ mower, 36″ mower, 48″ & 60″ mower, riding mower, blower, edger and weedeater).</li><li>Learn to service/perform the necessary preventative maintenance on equipment.</li><li>Learn the proper loading and unloading of equipment.</li></ul>Safety<ul><li>Attend/participate in company orientation program before performing any work.</li><li>Learn to adhere to all company safety rules/policies.</li><li>Must attend and participate in all tailgate meetings.</li><li>Must use appropriate safety equipment when necessary.</li></ul>Requirements<ul><li>Has a "can-do" attitude</li><li>Gets a job done on time and knows what to do next.</li><li>Volunteers to take on a new or different job, project or responsibility.</li><li>Goes beyond what is expected to do a better job.</li><li>Must be a "team player".Must get along with all co-workers.</li></ul> Typical Qualifications To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
