Government Jobs Overview

Without government, we wouldn't have roads, education, or other services we rely on or appreciate. Government agencies offer a wide array of services on the local, state, and federal level that provide safety, legal services, family services, veterans services, transportation, housing, and healthcare to the public. Some government jobs involve the preservation of wildlife, parks, beaches, and public lands, and others involve the storage, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts and other items in museums. There are tons of jobs in the government available to qualified job seekers who have college education or the right training.

Whether you hold a college degree in a specific field or have technical training, you could play a vital role in the public sector. For example, if you specialize in information technology, your skills could be just as important to a government agency as it would be to a private business. If you're a skilled mechanic, you could work in the military or for a municipal transportation entity.

When you work for the public sector, you can expect a slew of benefits (health insurance, retirement, vacation, etc.) that often outperform private sector benefits. Depending on the type of government job you get hired for, you may even be eligible for student loan forgiveness after 10 years.

As with the private sector, there are several types of administrative jobs to consider applying for. Here are a few similar positions to consider:

Government Worker Education and Skills

Just like in the private sector, the education, training, and skills you need to get a government job depend on the job type. The Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies job requirements for the federal government using the General Schedule (GS) scale:

  • GS-1 requires no high school diploma and includes general laborer, enlisted military personnel, census taker, or library assistant.
  • GS-2 requires at least a high school diploma and includes mail carrier, social services assistant, postal clerk, or data entry clerk.
  • G-3 requires at least one year of full-time study after completing high school. These jobs often include library jobs or jobs in development and sustainability.
  • G-4 requires an associate degree or two years of full-time study after high school and include data transcriber, stenographer, and automation clerk assistant jobs.
  • GS-5 or GS-7 jobs as federal law enforcement personnel, an accountant, or a museum curator require a bachelor's degree.
  • GS-9 and GS-11 jobs require a master's degree, doctorate, or law degree. These jobs include federal attorney, IRS officer, economist, foreign service officer, or human resources manager.

Many high-profile government jobs require additional training and licensing. The skills needed for a a job in the government vary, depending on which job you're applying for.

How Much Do Government Jobs Pay?

One question we often hear is: "Does the government pay better than the private sector?" Well, it depends on the type of job and whether it's a municipal, state, or federal job. For example, survey researchers and bus drivers earn between $16 and $17 dollars on average. Police officers typically earn $43,958 per year, whereas government defense contract managers earn $74,274.
