I am considered an expert in installing and adjusting mechanical flanges, oilers, spring switches, and related switch equipment; using railroad hand and power tools, including tongs, bell hammers, spike hammers, wrenches, power drills, power saws, grinders, air hammers, and pneumatic jacks; repairing rail, ties, ballast, roadbeds, trestles, bridges, and highway-crossing signal components; responding to derailments; and operating and performing driver maintenance on trucks and motor maintenance cars. Working Conditions: Grade 5 railroad repairers typically work outside, often in seasonal temperature and weather extremes and are subject to the following conditions: loud machinery noises; possible burns from hot equipment; fumes from creosote, insect sprays, and smoke; falls from hazardous footing; dirt, cuts, and grease or oil; insect bites; and possible injuries from handling equipment.
