KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of: The operating principles, methods and techniques, care and maintenance of the most commonly used types of respirators and respiratory therapy equipment including medical gas, humidity, aerosol therapy, bronchial hygiene, airway management, and mechanical ventilation therapies; Etiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and associated comorbidities; Theory, practices, and procedures of respiratory care and therapy; Management and respiratory therapy rules, regulations, policies, and procedures commonly found in health care facilities; Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (Levels II-IV) according to American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines; Departmental protocols and procedures for the safe and effective administration of medications; Policies and practices for recording and maintaining patient care information accurately and securely; Techniques for performing, analyzing, and assessing bedside pulmonary function studies and arterial punctures. Ability to (all levels): Administer skilled respiratory therapy treatments; Set up, assemble, and adjust respiratory therapy equipment; Develop an understanding of hospital routines; Work effectively with medical staff; Communicate with patients; Interact tactfully with patients and physicians; Work under pressure; Maintain quality control programs; Follow written and oral directions.
