Description

The Department of English and Modern Languages at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Assistant Professor of Spanish.

Examples of Duties

• Teaching undergraduate language, linguistics, cultural, and special topics courses in Spanish and or English as assigned.
• Teaching graduate level linguistics courses in Spanish or English.
• Maintaining an active research agenda.
• Serving as an academic advisor for majors in the department.
• Serving on departmental, college, and university committees.
• Experience leading or planning Study Abroad programs Maintaining an active professional development agenda.
• Working cooperatively with the Coordinator of Foreign Languages and the faculty.
• Accepting direction from assigned peer evaluators in developing and implementing syllabi, teaching methods, assignments, and grading standards to achieve program-wide student learning outcomes.
• Attending face-to-face general department and specific program meetings.
• Performing other essential duties by the required deadlines relevant to instructors teaching assignments, as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in Spanish or Hispanic Studies with a focus in Sociolinguistics or Second Language Acquisition by date of appointment.
• At least three (3) years of college or university instruction in Spanish
• Native or near-native language proficiency in Spanish and English
• Proven effectiveness in teaching and advising
• Training and teaching in linguistics and global language and culture preferred
• Experience in recruitment and retention
