Job Summary

The Assistant Superintendent supports the Superintendent in planning, organizing, and supervising all construction project activities. The Assistant Superintendent helps to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the project schedule, drawings, and specifications. The Assistant Superintendent acts as a field leader, coordinating subcontractors and upholding high standards for day-to-day onsite construction operations.

  • Coach and mentor Carpenters and Laborers, providing training on responsibilities and resources based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Support project start-up activities by procuring materials, ensuring site access for optimal workflow, and attending preconstruction meetings, as requested.
  • Support the RFI process, as needed. Communicate the most recent information to the field crews. Collaborate with the project team to ensure constructability or identify details that may require revisions.
  • Support the Superintendent with project tasks and duties, as directed. Serve as the backup to the Superintendent when appropriate. Support the completion of work (self-perform) in the field.
  • Oversee and manage subcontractors. Hold subcontractors accountable to their scope of work per the drawings, specifications, and submittals, and ensure work is completed per plan.
  • Assist the Superintendent with coordinating subcontractors by managing the day-to-day workflow and schedule.
  • Oversee project site safety and enforce safety protocols. Lead safety meetings with project teams, as needed.
  • Create and manage look-ahead schedules. Assist with master schedule oversight, working to mitigate delays, problem solve, and determine how to adjust.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, to include subcontractor coordination meetings, OAC meetings, safety meetings, preparatory meetings, and other project team meetings.
  • Maintain the site logistics plan. Oversee utilities and onsite facilities. Coordinate and schedule deliveries/materials and ensure access/badging is available. Ensure project site is clean and organized.
  • Conduct daily reports to capture and document project information, including manpower/headcount, daily activities, progress, and delays.  
  • Perform layout, as needed. Set control lines, as needed, and ensure compliance with established control line and grade.
  • Obtain permits and licenses and schedule inspections, as needed.
  • Support material and equipment procurement. Manage equipment and tool orders.
  • Order and maintain project signage, as needed, by coordinating with Safety, Marketing, and other relevant departments.
  • Schedule roll-off services. Arrange for onsite dumpsters and haul-away and return of new containers.
  • Support sustainability and stormwater management, as needed. Perform daily inspections and maintain worksite as necessary, to include ensuring no dirt runs off, sewers are blocked off, and windscreens are set up.
  • Manage punchlist and assign tasks to subcontractors as appropriate. Schedule subcontractors to complete work, ensure the work is completed and meets client expectations, and ensure timely and accurate completion of warranty items.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships and rapport with stakeholders, including clients, subcontractors, vendors, design teams, engineers, facilities managers, and inspectors. Sustain client confidence by demonstrating construction expertise and considering client needs and values.

Work Environment

This job operates in a construction work site environment with others as well as in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and personal protection equipment.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use manual dexterity. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, lift or carry up to 20 lbs., speak, hear, use eye/hand coordination, and reach with arms and hands. The employee must frequently be able to work in a construction job site environment, including but not limited to working outside, working alone, excessive dampness, excessive heat/cold, fumes/smoke/gases/chemicals/solvents, walking on uneven surfaces, noise/vibrations, and working around moving equipment/machinery. The employee is frequently required to climb stairs and ladders, balance, stoop or crouch. The employee is occasionally required to lift or carry up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Expected Hours of Work/Travel

Work may necessitate a flexible schedule and/or extended hours when required by project schedule. Ability to travel or accept full-time assignments to any location where Bryan Construction conducts business. Work may require occasional weekend and evening work.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous field construction experience
  • Supervisory experience overseeing trades
  • Experience partnering with subcontractors
  • OSHA 10 certification

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Valid driver’s license
  • 5+ years supervisory experiences overseeing trades
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, to include Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
  • Experience using Bluebeam
  • Experience working for a general contractor
  • Experience using construction management software
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • First Aid, CPR, AED training certification
  • Certifications to operate machinery/equipment (forklift, skid steer, etc.)
  • Experience building and managing a project schedule
  • Applied knowledge of Stormwater Protection Programs (SWPP)
  • Experience working with permitting, licensing, and inspection requirements
  • Experience with document management and/or contract review

Salary Range: $80,000-$95,000
