About the Position
The Auditor I serves as a first-level auditor responsible for organizing, leading, and executing audits for a state agency or within their assigned functional area. This position serves as a financial auditor within the Division of Monitoring, conducting fiscal monitoring reviews of MDHS-awarded subgrant agreements to ensure compliance with all financial and programmatic requirements. Key responsibilities include preparing reports, conducting fieldwork, and presenting review findings to the supervisor. The auditor reviews financial records and supporting documentation to determine compliance with grant requirements and applicable state, federal, and agency regulations, and prepares detailed financial reports to support audit conclusions. This position also involves identifying and evaluating risks and opportunities related to financial transactions and staying informed of industry standards, regulatory updates, and best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.
What youll need to be Successful
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as using Excel to analyze financial data, preparing reports in Word, managing communication in Outlook. Strong attention to detail, demonstrated through reviewing financial records for accuracy, identifying discrepancies, and ensuring compliance documentation is complete. Effective communication skills, shown through preparing clear audit summaries, presenting findings to supervisors, and collaborating with subgrantees during monitoring reviews. Strong time-management skills, including planning fieldwork schedules and completing tasks within required timeframes. Strong oral and written communication skills. Proven ability to work independently, such as managing multiple monitoring assignments simultaneously or completing audit documentation within required timeframes with minimal supervision. Knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards, theory and practices. Strong analytical skills and prioritization skills including identifying discrepancies in financial documentation. High attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree and 0-2 years of experience. Agency preferred qualifications: A Bachelors degree in finance, accounting, or business. At least five years of experience in fiscal monitoring and compliance with federal and state laws; for example, conducting on-site monitoring visits, reviewing financial records for grant compliance, or evaluating internal controls for state or federal programs.

Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave
