Job Title: Biospecimen CoordinatorJob Description

The Biospecimen Coordinator plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by receiving, verifying, processing, and tracking a wide range of human biological specimens. This position focuses on accurate data entry, meticulous documentation, and strict adherence to project protocols to ensure high-quality, timely results for clinical and research activities. The role requires strong attention to detail, comfort working with biological materials, and the ability to collaborate effectively within a laboratory team.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and sort all incoming specimens, ensuring accurate and timely intake into the laboratory.
  • Open packages and verify that information on requisition forms matches the information on collection containers.
  • Capture and enter specimen information accurately into laboratory information management systems (LIMS and Bioinventory) and other computer databases.
  • Enter and track data across multiple laboratory information management systems while maintaining data integrity and completeness.
  • Maintain and update documentation within electronic master files, including uploading and completing documents and using document exchange portals with thorough completeness checks.
  • Keep current with multiple project protocols and requirements and apply them consistently to specimen handling and processing.
  • Examine specimens for adequacy and suitability for processing according to established criteria.
  • Label specimen samples correctly and measure volumes to ensure accurate downstream processing.
  • Meet key production metrics and quality measures so that samples are processed and handed off for timely and accurate results based on project needs.
  • Take clear, accurate photographs of data on the outside of specimen containers for quality control purposes.
  • Pack and ship specimens to designated facilities following proper shipping, handling, and documentation procedures.
  • Properly store specimen samples under appropriate conditions when required to maintain sample integrity.
  • Assist clients and project managers with inquiries related to specimen requirements, processing, and test turnaround times.
  • Identify and document situations that may adversely impact sample integrity and promptly notify management and project managers.
  • Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste in accordance with safety guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Sort, organize, and prepare all paperwork for scanning and electronic record keeping.
  • Respond to the loading dock door for incoming shipments and couriers and ensure proper receipt and routing of materials.
  • Perform administrative duties including filing paperwork, answering phones, and supporting general laboratory office functions.
  • Sanitize workstations and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the team and demonstrate respect and professionalism toward colleagues.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, standard operating procedures, and company policies.
  • Work with incoming samples such as saliva, DNA, blood, stool, urine, and other human biological materials.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in the sciences, with Biology preferred.
  • Strong data entry skills and proficient typing abilities (no formal typing test required).
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and documentation.
  • Comfort working with specimen preparation, specimen receiving, and specimen handling processes.
  • Ability to handle human biological specimens, including blood, urine, tissue, saliva, DNA, stool, and similar materials.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Ability to perform work with a high level of accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, work in protective equipment, and sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • High level of attention to detail combined with effective problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work overtime when needed to meet project timelines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory or related work environment.
  • Clinical trial experience is preferred.
  • Science background or knowledge, particularly in biology or related disciplines.
  • Experience with specimen collection, specimen processing, specimen handling, specimen pickup, labeling, and inventory control.
  • Familiarity with laboratory workflows such as biobanking, bioprocessing, and analytics.
  • Experience with inventory management and sample tracking systems.
  • Comfort working with and following standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications and Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience working in a high-throughput testing or research facility is a plus.
  • Interest in contributing to public health initiatives and large-scale testing efforts.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site role in a laboratory setting with a shift schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The environment focuses on biobanking, bioprocessing, and analytics, and involves handling incoming samples such as saliva, DNA, blood, stool, urine, and other human biological materials. Team members work with laboratory information management systems (LIMS and Bioinventory), standard office software such as MS Office and Teams, and electronic documentation and scanning tools. The role requires wearing appropriate protective equipment when handling specimens and waste, and spending extended periods sitting or standing while performing data entry and specimen processing tasks. Workstations and shared areas are regularly sanitized to maintain a clean and safe facility. The organization operates as a high-volume testing facility, including work that supports large-scale health initiatives, offering a collaborative culture where staff contribute directly to important clinical and research efforts.

This is a Contract position based out of Piscataway, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
