Business Reporter

The Tulsa World seeks a hard-charging, multidimensional journalist to lead our business coverage. This is a key newsroom role tied to our audience growth strategy. We're looking for a razor-sharp reporter who can produce local business news across platforms while helping shape coverage priorities and expand our reach.

Tulsa is home to major energy and aerospace companies, the nations largest inland river port and a thriving small-business community. In 2024, Tulsa recorded $3.8 billion in exports - $1 billion more than Oklahoma City. From global corporations to locally owned businesses, Tulsa is full of untold stories about innovation, entrepreneurship, economic development and decisions about Oklahomas future.

We're looking for a journalist who can distill complicated topics for a broad audience, uncover stories that matter. The ideal candidate will combine exceptional reporting skills with strong news judgment, digital fluency and motivation to grow readership and subscriptions.

Position Responsibilities

• Help shape the Tulsa Worlds business coverage by identifying stories that inform readers, hold decision-makers accountable and drive digital audience growth.
• Report, research and write enterprise, investigative, breaking news, explanatory stories and Q&A's about Tulsas business community and Oklahomas economy.
• Develop coverage of key industries, including energy, aerospace, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, while recognizing the importance of locally owned small businesses.
• Explain how business intersects with government, public policy, politics and everyday life in Oklahoma.
• Collaborate with editors and reporters to establish daily and long-term coverage priorities.
• Produce journalism across multiple platforms, including digital and print articles, short-form video and social media.
• Identify opportunities to turn one story into several assets, including explainers, FAQs, photo galleries and video.
• Build and maintain a strong network of sources, including business leaders, entrepreneurs, workers, economists, policymakers and community stakeholders.
• Use audience analytics, search trends and digital engagement practices to identify opportunities to reach new readers and convert them into subscribers.
• Write engaging, SEO-friendly headlines and develop creative approaches to presenting complex business stories.
• Respond quickly and accurately to breaking business news while maintaining a strong pipeline of enterprise reporting.
• Uphold the highest standards of journalism ethics, accuracy, fairness, independence and accountability.

• Knowledge of how business, politics, public policy and economic development intersect.
• Knowledge of digital audience analytics, SEO and strategies for increasing reader engagement and subscriptions.

• Ability to produce high-impact business journalism in a fast-paced, competitive news environment.
• Ability to make complicated financial, economic and policy issues accessible to a broad audience.
• Ability to identify original, hyper-local stories that distinguish the Tulsa Worlds coverage.
• Ability to produce digital-first journalism and work across multiple platforms.
• Ability to balance breaking news, daily reporting and ambitious enterprise projects.
• Ability to build relationships throughout Tulsas business community.
• Ability to collaborate and help the newsroom deliver a best-in-class journalism product.
• Ability to communicate information clearly in writing and speaking so others will understand you
• Ability to work independently and as a team under deadlines
• Ability to use equipment such as cameras, recording devices and lighting to produce optimal visual media
• Role is hybrid in Tulsa with at least Tuesdays in the office

Education & Experience

• A bachelor's degree in journalism or related field or equivalent related experience is preferred.
• A minimum of three years of relevant reporting experience is required.
• Demonstrated experience covering business, economics, public policy or related subjects is preferred.
• Experience using BLOX is a bonus.
