POSITION SUMMARY: The Dental Assistant performs a variety of technical duties to assist in the examination and treatment of patients: perform related duties involved in the care and maintenance of dental instruments, equipment and supplies.

 

POSTION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  1. Minimum High School graduate or equivalent.
  2. Graduate from a dental assistant school preferred.

Experience: Requires one (1) to three (3) years' experience.

 

Skills and Abilities (which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position):

  1. Good oral and written communication skills, including telephone skills.
  2. Capable of performing in an environment with numerous interruptions.
  3. Ability to operate a computer.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of dental procedures, terminology and techniques.

Transportation Requirement: Must possess a valid driver's license and automobile with insurance coverage as required by the State of Missouri.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  1. Prepares patient, sterilizes, disinfects, and logs instruments.
  2. Sets up instrument trays, prepares dental materials.
  3. Assists in the dental treatment of patients to include seating patients, providing dentist with instruments and equipment, charting examinations and treatment results on patient record.
  4. Assists dentist during dental procedures; prepares patient, obtains health history, vitals and consent forms.
  5. Handles impressions and model pour ups.
  6. Expose radiographs and develop.
  7. Monitors and records nitrous oxide treatment.
  8. Observes patient during procedures and alerts dentist to sudden changes in patient's condition; administer emergency procedure as required.
  9. Give post-op instructions.
  10. Records treatment information and scans documents in patient records.
  11. Performs routine treatment procedures, such as cleaning, polishing, fluoride varnish and fluoride.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Marginal: Participates in health fairs, screenings and community outreach and education programs.
