Main Purpose of Job
A DJS Assistant Superintendent Residential Facility I is the first managerial level of work overseeing the daily administration, management and overall operation of a large Department of Juvenile Services facility. Employees in this classification function as deputies to Facility Superintendents and assume full responsibility for the facility or facilities in the absence of the Superintendent.
Employees in this classification manage the work of employees providing services to resident youth through subordinate DJS Supervisors.Â
Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and may be subject to call-in based on staffing needs or emergency situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:Â High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission Regulation.

Experience: Â Two years of experience supervising staff in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth.

Note:Â An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of the required general experience. A Bachelor''s degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the required general experience.Â
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate for this position may possess any of the following qualifications:
Candidate will: be flexible with work schedule and have the ability to work evening hours;Â have the ability to teach, train and build effective teams within the facility; be knowledgeable; be safety and security-minded, and; be able to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines to implement systems and schedules.
Possession of a Bachelorâs degree in the social or behavioral sciences or criminal justice from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operatorâs license valid in the State of Maryland.
3. Candidates who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate within 365 days of initial appointment or placement in this classification according to Code of Maryland Regulations 12.10.01.03. Employees are required to maintain certification while employed.
