Excel Tutoring Lead Tutor

Description of Service Opportunity:

Excel Tutoring is strongest when tutors are connected to the instructional expertise already in schools. The Lead Tutor is a school-based literacy or math coach who provides instructional leadership: helping the team make thoughtful decisions about students, groups, materials, instruction, and progress

The Lead Tutor is the school-based instructional lead for Excel Tutoring and is typically a literacy or math coach. The Lead Tutor helps ensure tutoring is targeted, aligned to CPS instructional approaches, and responsive to student progress. Depending on the size and needs of the program, one coach may lead literacy, math, or both, or the Lead Tutor allocation may be shared between two coaches. Daily operations and logistics are owned by the Site Coordinator.

What you will do

Partner with the principal and school team to review current student data, identify students for Excel, and determine the most appropriate literacy or math focus.

Create purposeful groups of no more than four students based on shared instructional needs and help match tutors to groups.

Co-design small-group tutoring plans with tutors and connect them to district-approved, research-based literacy or math materials aligned with CPS approaches and priorities.

Orient tutors to their students, group learning goals, materials, and instructional expectations before tutoring begins.

Meet regularly with tutors to review student work and data, monitor academic progress, and plan next instructional steps or adjustments.

Observe tutoring periodically and provide practical, supportive coaching and feedback to strengthen instruction.

Help tutors and school teams decide when a group, goal, material, intervention plan, or instructional approach needs to change based on student evidence.

Help set a warm, focused, student-centered tone for the tutoring program and build relationships with students across the site.

Support tutors in sharing meaningful information about student progress with families and caregivers.

Facilitate school-based professional learning and ongoing instructional support for tutors, and participate in district Excel preparation and learning as applicable.

What we are looking for

Current CPS literacy or math coach strongly preferred; priority will be given to regularly appointed CPS literacy/math coaches.

Appropriate Massachusetts educator licensure and strong knowledge of literacy or mathematics instruction.

Experience interpreting student data, designing targeted academic support, and connecting intervention to grade-level/core instruction.

Ability to coach adults in a supportive, practical way and collaborate with colleagues in support of students.

Strong collaboration, organization, and follow-through.

Fall 2026 schedule and compensation

Preparation: week of 9/28/26

Session I: 10/5-12/18/26

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays, from school dismissal to late bus; Lead Tutor support includes preparation/coaching time outside direct tutoring

Compensation: $60/hour; up to $4,020 for the fall session, based on the school's approved Lead Tutor allocation. An allocation may be shared between two coaches when appropriate.

Please note that your hourly rate is depending upon your collective bargaining agreement or individual hourly rate.

Requirements:

Licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in one of the following areas: Elementary (1-6), Moderate Disabilities (preK-8, 5-12), Early Childhood (preK-2), English (5-12), English as a Second Language (preK-6, 5-12), Math (1-6, 5-8), or Reading Specialist (all levels) required.

Experience providing academic support for students who are currently performing below grade level

Priority will be given to regularly appointed literacy or math coaches from Cambridge Public School District

September 28 , 2026 through Decemeber 18, 2026

Not Exceed $4020.00

Please note that your hourly rate is dependent upon your collective bargaining agreement

or individual hourly rate. If you are a non-exempt employee and have worked more than

40 hours a week, you will be paid time and a half for any hours worked over 40 hours
