    As a Field Service Engineer II, you will be responsible for providing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and technical support for sophisticated analytical instrumentation throughout a multi-state territory. This position will primarily support Trace Elemental Analysis and Chromatography instrumentation, including Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Ion Chromatography (IC), and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) systems.

    The ideal candidate combines strong technical troubleshooting skills with an understanding of analytical chemistry and the applications our customers use these instruments to perform. You will work directly with customers in research, industrial, environmental, pharmaceutical, and other laboratory settings to maximize instrument performance and minimize downtime.

    Location: Nebraska. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

    Territory: Primary focus on supporting customers across Nebraska and Iowa, while also covering Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota as needed. Approximately 50-75% travel within the assigned territory is required.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair Thermo Fisher Scientific Trace Elemental and Chromatography instrumentation, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, and HPLC systems.
    • Diagnose complex electrical, mechanical, fluidic, vacuum, software, and application-related instrument issues and identify effective solutions.
    • Perform preventative maintenance, qualification, system upgrades, and other field service activities in accordance with established procedures and quality standards.
    • Provide high-quality technical support and customer service while developing strong, professional relationships with customers.
    • Apply knowledge of analytical instrumentation and laboratory applications to understand customer workflows and effectively diagnose system performance issues.
    • Manage service activities independently across a geographically dispersed territory while balancing customer priorities, travel requirements, and scheduled maintenance.
    • Accurately document service activities, troubleshooting findings, parts usage, and completed repairs using company service management systems.
    • Read and interpret technical documentation, schematics, service procedures, and instrument diagnostics.
    • Support customers on instrument operation, routine maintenance, and best practices as appropriate.
    • Partner with technical support, applications specialists, sales, and other Field Service Engineers to resolve complex customer issues.
    • Maintain assigned tools, test equipment, service parts, and company resources in accordance with established procedures.
    • Follow all Thermo Fisher Scientific safety, quality, regulatory, and customer-site requirements.
    • Respond to customer needs on short notice when necessary to minimize instrument downtime.
    • Consistently deliver a high level of customer satisfaction and professionalism.

    Education:

    Bachelor's degree required in Chemistry, Engineering, Electronics, Physics, or a related scientific or technical field.

    Experience:

    • 2+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, or repairing complex analytical, scientific, laboratory, or comparable electromechanical equipment.
    • Experience with chromatography, elemental analysis, analytical chemistry, or laboratory instrumentation is strongly preferred.
    • Previous experience supporting ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, HPLC, or related analytical instrumentation is highly desirable.
    • Troubleshooting complex systems and an understanding of the scientific applications and workflows associated with analytical instrumentation are strongly preferred.
    • Relevant technical training or certifications are advantageous.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong electrical, mechanical, and system-level troubleshooting skills.
    • Ability to systematically diagnose complex instrument problems and isolate failures to the component or subsystem level.
    • Understanding of fluidics, electronics, vacuum systems, pumps, valves, detectors, high-voltage systems, computer-controlled instrumentation, and related technologies is beneficial.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to work independently in the field.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
    • Ability to translate technical information for customers of varying expertise and provide effective training and support on instrument operation and basic maintenance.
    • Ability to effectively manage schedules, prioritize competing customer needs, and organize workload across a large geographic territory.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to effectively use service management and diagnostic software.

    Travel and Physical Requirements:

    • Frequent overnight travel, approximately 50% of working nights, depending on customer demand and service activity.
    • Travel extensively throughout the territory by automobile covering substantial distances between customer sites, with occasional air travel as required.
    • Respond to customer needs and changes in scheduling with limited notice.
    • Lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
    • Work in laboratory, industrial, and other customer environments while following applicable safety requirements.

    Other:

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
    • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screen.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
