Job Description

About BQLT

Brooklyn Queens Land Trust (BQLT), 501(c)(3) that owns and permanently protects 37 community gardens across Brooklyn and Queens. We work alongside hundreds of volunteer gardeners, neighborhood leaders, public agencies and community partners to keep these open spaces open, safe, green and serving their communities.

BQLT is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and resourceful Finance & Grants Manager to become our second full-time staff member.

The Role

The Finance & Grants Manager is a generalist role for someone excited to help run and grow a small, community-based nonprofit. You will take ownership of BQLT's day-to-day financial administration, grant management, and organizational recordkeeping. With the systems you put in place, these core responsibilities should be readily manageable, leaving substantial time to expand BQLT's broader fundraising efforts—constructing our fundraising strategy, cultivating neighborhood and philanthropic donors, and pursuing support from government agencies, foundations, corporate partners, and other sources. There's tremendous room for creativity and great potential for growth and success.

We're looking for a resourceful, roll-up-your-sleeves colleague who is comfortable moving between detailed administrative work and larger organizational priorities. Experience with tools such as QuickBooks and Google Sheets is helpful, but proficiency can be developed on the job.

You will:

  • Run AR & AP – invoices, reimbursements, vendor payments, and documentation on google drive
  • Track spending against each grant, program, and funding source
  • Use Google Sheets / Excel to prepare accurate & timely financial reports and forecasts, presented to the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and BQLT board
  • Work with the Program Manager to remunerate contractors

What Success Looks Like

Within 90 days we expect the right person to have established a reliable monthly rhythm for bookkeeping and payments; produced a clear picture of BQLT's active grants, balances, reimbursements status, and upcoming deadlines; identified the multiple new funding opportunities worth pursuing. This role reports to a member of the BQLT Board.

Working at the BQLT

This is a full-time hybrid position based in Brooklyn, with occasional visits to our 37 gardens across Brooklyn and Queens. Compensation starts at $30/hr, commensurate with experience, plus healthcare support. Because our staff is small, this role offers unusual exposure to every part of running a community-based nonprofit.

BQLT is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from candidates with a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds.
