Financial Controller
Steadfast |
San Antonio, FL
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
The Opportunity
Steadfast is
seeking an accomplished Financial Controller to lead its accounting function
and strengthen the financial discipline, reporting, and systems that support
the company’s growth.
Reporting
directly to the CFO, the Controller will own the integrity of the company’s
financial statements, the effectiveness of its accounting operations, and the
development of a high-performing accounting team. This leader will translate
financial results into clear, actionable insights for executives and divisional
leaders while building reliable processes that can scale with the business.
This is a
hands-on leadership role for someone who can move comfortably between reviewing
a complex reconciliation, challenging a job-cost variance, coaching a team
member, and presenting financial results to leadership. The successful
candidate will identify issues early, investigate their root causes, and drive
them through resolution.
What You Will Own
Accounting Leadership amp; Financial Reporting
- Own the monthly, quarterly,
and annual close, delivering accurate, complete financial statements on a
consistent, clearly defined schedule.
- Oversee general ledger
accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, accruals,
intercompany activity where applicable, and payroll accounting.
- Establish clear standards for
account reconciliations, journal entries, supporting documentation, and
management review.
- Ensure the balance sheet is
fully supported, reconciling items are resolved promptly, and accounting
judgments are documented.
- Maintain consistent
accounting policies and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
- Deliver consolidated and
divisional reporting that explains operating results, significant
variances, emerging risks, and recommended actions.
- Prepare financial reporting
packages for the CFO, executive leadership, board, lenders, and other
financial partners, as needed.
Operational Finance amp; Job Profitability
- Partner with divisional
leaders and project managers to improve visibility into revenue, labor,
materials, subcontractor costs, overhead, and job profitability.
- Lead monthly financial review
meetings that connect results to operational drivers and establish clear
follow-through on corrective actions.
- Own the integrity of job-cost
accounting, including cost coding, allocations, cutoff, and reconciliation
to the general ledger.
- Oversee revenue recognition
and work-in-progress reporting, where applicable, including the review of
estimates, change orders, and underbillings or overbillings.
- Establish reliable inventory
accounting and reconciliation processes, including physical counts,
valuation, usage tracking, and investigation of discrepancies.
- Identify margin erosion,
unusual cost trends, and reporting gaps early enough for leaders to take
action.
Cash Flow amp; Working Capital
- Partner with the CFO to
maintain dependable cash-flow forecasts and visibility into near-term cash
requirements.
- Oversee reporting on
receivables, collections, payables, retainage, and unbilled revenue, where
applicable.
- Work with operations and
accounting teams to resolve billing issues, reduce overdue balances, and
improve the timing of cash collections.
- Strengthen payment approval
processes and controls over disbursements.
Internal Controls, Audit amp; Compliance
- Design, document, and
maintain practical internal controls that protect company assets and
support reliable financial reporting.
- Establish clear approval
authority, segregation of duties, and review procedures across key
accounting processes.
- Lead preparation for external
audits and other financial reviews, serving as the primary accounting
contact and ensuring timely, well-supported responses.
- Maintain audit-ready records
throughout the year and resolve control deficiencies through documented
corrective actions.
- Develop and enforce standard
operating procedures with clear ownership and accountability.
- Oversee the accounting team’s
tracking and documentation of Notices to Owner, lien waivers, and
releases, coordinating with operations and legal counsel as needed.
- Coordinate with external
advisers on tax filings and other reporting requirements, and support the
CFO with lender reporting and covenant monitoring.
Systems amp; Process Improvement
- Improve the reliability and
efficiency of accounting workflows, financial reporting, and supporting
systems.
- Establish consistent account
structures, job and divisional coding, and data standards that support
meaningful reporting.
- Reduce unnecessary manual
work through appropriate automation, system integration, and process
redesign.
- Strengthen controls over
critical spreadsheets, including data validation, documentation, access,
and version management.
- Lead the accounting
requirements, testing, reconciliation, and adoption of financial system
improvements.
- Partner with HR and payroll
teams to ensure accurate payroll accounting, labor allocations, and timely
weekly labor reporting.
Team Leadership amp; Business Partnership
- Lead, coach, and develop the
accounting team, establishing clear responsibilities, performance
expectations, and development plans.
- Build a culture of accuracy,
accountability, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
- Establish cross-training and
documented procedures to reduce reliance on individual employees.
- Serve as a trusted partner to
the CFO and operational leaders, communicating financial issues clearly
and bringing practical recommendations.
- Address difficult issues
directly and constructively, maintaining high standards while building
productive relationships across departments.
