What we want

The Instructional Designer III, under direction of Assistant Director of Academic Technology, provides leadership and oversight of the course design and development team. leads the development and support for classroom, hybrid, and online courses within a health sciences environment. Leads and manages the development of training for faculty and/or staff in areas of instructional design, andragogy, and best practices. Manages and leads project work in collaboration with subject matter experts, applying technical instructional design skills to support the delivery of high-quality educational experiences in a medical school setting.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Instructional or Learning Design and Technology

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Learning Management Systems and educational technologies.

  • Knowledge of various instructional technologies implemented at Texas A&M University (Canvas, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

  • Advanced skill level in the development of instructional materials.

  • Experience in the creation and conducting of instructional media trainings for staff and/or faculty.

  • Knowledge of State institutions regulations regarding the implementation of educational technologies.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

  • Knowledge of online course design principles and practices

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications

Responsibilities:

Course Design and Development

  • Collaborates with instructors and subject matter experts to design and develop online, blended, and web-enhanced courses across a range of health sciences disciplines

  • Leads faculty and staff through the instructional design process and makes key recommendations for instructional strategies using evidence-based design models

  • Manages course design and development projects and maintains online development resources, ensuring projects are delivered on time and meet defined quality standards

  • Oversees the planning and coordination of materials with course instructors and the instructional design team

  • Designs online modules and manages the course review process for quality assurance

  • Translates complex subject matter provided by faculty and staff into clear, engaging, and learner-centered instructional content

  • Applies instructional sequencing and curriculum mapping techniques to support coherent course and program design

Instructional Media and Technology

  • Designs, develops, and evaluates all instructional media products provided by Academic Technology

  • Researches, reviews, and recommends software, multimedia applications, and web-based educational technologies appropriate for health professions education delivery

  • Evaluates and implements media tools and software to enhance faculty-created content and learner engagement

  • Provides pedagogical and technical support to faculty for creating online instructional content, including lecture capture, interactive modules, and multimedia integration

  • Stays current with emerging instructional technologies and makes recommendations for tools that improve instructional quality and accessibility

  • Supports integration of learning technologies within institutionally supported platforms (e.g., Canvas, Mediasite, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Poll Everywhere)

  • Knowledge of Articulate Storyline 360 or similar rapid online authoring tools preferred

Training and Support

  • Develops training materials to assist faculty and staff in the development of sound instructional media and online courses

  • Conducts both small group and large group training sessions for faculty on instructional design needs, including onboarding sessions for faculty new to online course development

  • Creates self-help documents and online tutorials to assist instructors with course management tools

  • Collaborates with university offices to co-host training sessions for faculty

  • Provides individualized consultation and coaching to faculty and staff, guiding them through the course development lifecycle from initial design to launch

  • Develops and maintains a library of reusable instructional design resources including templates, design guides, and best practice documentation

Curriculum & Program Support

  • Supports the instructional design needs of a medical school, working alongside faculty and staff who provide subject matter expertise in medical curriculum

  • Assists in building and maintaining course templates and design standards that align with the school's educational goals and program outcomes

  • Collaborates with faculty committees and curriculum coordinators to ensure instructional materials are aligned with program learning objectives; faculty provide content knowledge; this role provides design expertise

  • Supports accessibility compliance across all course and media deliverables, ensuring materials meet institutional standards

  • Coordinates with the Academic Technology team to ensure consistent delivery and technical performance of instructional content across platforms

  • Assists with copyright and fair use guidance for instructional materials in collaboration with university resources

  • Contributes to continuous quality improvement efforts by participating in course review cycles and providing data-informed design recommendations

Usability and Evaluation

  • Performs usability studies and creates reports to improve course and media quality

  • Tests new instructional technologies and evaluates educational applications for effectiveness

  • Analyzes course-level data and learner feedback to identify instructional gaps and recommend design improvements

  • Maintains a standardized naming convention and organizational structure for instructional media materials

  • Assists with program-level course review processes, ensuring consistency in design standards and accessibility compliance across course offerings

  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
