JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Light Equipment Operator assists work crews constructing, maintaining, and repairing City streets and drainage systems by operating a variety of light equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Receives and reviews work orders; gathers appropriate materials and equipment needed for each task.
  • Conducts daily inspections of vehicles and equipment prior to use each day.
  • Operates a variety of equipment to assist with the completion of public works projects for the City to include bulk and brush solid waste collection and streets and drainage construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Assists with concrete work; breaks out curbs, sidewalks, and driveway aprons; sets forms and rebar; patches and pours concrete.
  • Completes various paperwork to include driving data, landfill, and brush site forms as required.
  • Participates in the maintenance and upkeep of equipment and shop areas unloads and loads transport trucks and organizes unloaded materials.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed outdoors and requires exposure to inclement weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, and hazardous chemical. May be required to traverse uneven surfaces, climb ladders, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of experience operating light equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Records maintenance and retention practices and procedures.
  • Work site safety set up procedures.
  • Tools, materials, methods, and equipment used in streets and drainage construction and maintenance.
  • Concrete forming, patching, and pouring methods.

Skill in:

  • Reading, measuring, and calculating types and sizes of materials needed
  • Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Using various types of hand tools.
  • Operating equipment in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a Class B Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement or obtain license within six (6) months of hire.
