Position Summary: The Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating conventional machine tools, including manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses, to manufacture, repair, and modify precision components. This role requires the ability to interpret engineering drawings, determine machining methods, and maintain tight tolerances while producing high-quality parts safely and efficiently.
Essential Functions:
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, mechanical drawings, work orders, tolerances, and specifications to determine machining requirements and plan the sequence of operations.
- Set up and operate conventional/manual milling machines to perform machining operations such as end milling, slotting, fly cutting, boring, drilling, tapping, and hole layout.
- Set up and operate conventional/manual lathes to perform machining operations such as turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, and related operations.
- Select and properly use cutting tools, workholding methods, machine attachments, speeds, feeds, depth of cut, and machining methods based on material properties, part requirements, and shop mathematics.
- Measure, inspect, and verify machined parts using precision measuring instruments to ensure work meets drawing specifications, tolerances, and quality standards.
- Sharpen, maintain, and replace drills, mills, lathe tools, and other cutting tools as needed to support accurate and efficient manual machining operations.
- Perform routine machine maintenance, lubrication, cleaning, and minor adjustments to support safe, accurate, and efficient operation of machine tools.
- Identify and troubleshoot machining, tooling, setup, or quality issues; make appropriate adjustments and communicate concerns to the supervisor, engineering, quality, or maintenance personnel as needed.
- Take responsibility for personal work quality by verifying completed work, meeting ISO quality requirements, and completing required documentation, checklists, drawings, or signoffs.
- Use the ERP system and other required production records to enter labor time, update work order status, production-receipt work orders, and complete related paperwork accurately and timely.
- Support lean manufacturing, rapid improvement events, process improvements, and change initiatives with an open, collaborative, and continuous improvement mindset.
- Follow all safety rules, use required personal protective equipment, practice safe work habits, and maintain a clean, organized work area to support safe working conditions.

Competencies:
- Proficient in setting up and operating manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other conventional machine tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions.
- Strong knowledge of machining practices, cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and material characteristics.
- Skilled in precision measuring using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, height gauges, and other inspection equipment.
- Ability to maintain close tolerances and produce high-quality parts that meet specifications.
- Experience performing machine setups, adjustments, and basic preventive maintenance.
- Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and precision inspection techniques.
- Strong mathematical skills, including shop math, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Ability to troubleshoot machining issues and make process adjustments to improve quality and efficiency.
- Knowledge of tooling selection, workholding methods, and fixture setup.
- Commitment to workplace safety, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe machine operation.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality workmanship.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, and meet production deadlines.
Education and Experience:
- Technical diploma or certificate in Machine Tool Technology, Precision Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Five+ years of experience operating manual machining equipment in a manufacturing, maintenance, or machine shop environment; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated experience setting up and operating manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other conventional machine tools.
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Experience machining a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and other alloys, preferred.

Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, and use hands and fingers.
- Physical movement is required to inspect, touch, bend, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or twist in the capital equipment manufacturing process.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision requirements and ability to adjust focus.
- Light to moderate lifting may be required, up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to navigate manufacturing floor environment, which may include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
- Capacity to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, ear protection, and hard hat as needed.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to moderate levels of noise, vibration, odor, and varying temperatures in a manufacturing environment.
- Ability to follow health and safety guidelines and protocols including emergency procedures.
- Regular, predictable attendance is required.
