Job Summary

The Manager, Tax is the organization's dedicated tax resource, responsible for overseeing all aspects of Goosehead's income tax function including its relationship with third-party tax service providers. Reporting to the Director of Accounting, this role manages the flow of information between the core accounting team and external tax preparers, oversees the GAAP tax provision process, and ensures timely, accurate federal and state compliance across Goosehead's UP-C structure. The role also has oversight responsibility for personal property tax, sales and use tax, and supports other compliance functions and initiatives throughout the organization This is an ideal opportunity for a tax professional ready to transition from compliance preparation into a management and oversight capacity, leveraging outside specialists for technical execution while building the internal judgment to direct and review their work.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

Tax Compliance

  • Oversee the preparation and filing of federal and state corporate and partnership income tax returns by third-party service providers
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the accounting team and external tax preparers, ensuring timely and complete delivery of financial data and supporting schedules
  • Manage internal and external filing deadlines, tracking deliverables across all federal and state returns
  • Analyze and manage state nexus and apportionment positions across the company's multi-state operations, coordinating with outside advisors on filing methodology
  • Review returns, extensions, and underlying workpapers prepared by outside providers to ensure technical accuracy and completeness
  • Manage all tax payments and refunds and maintain accurate records individual federal and state liabilities

Income Tax Accounting

  • Oversee the preparation of the GAAP income tax provision including the calculation of taxable income and current and deferred income tax expense
  • Develop and maintain internal controls over the income tax provision process to ensure accuracy and maintain SOX compliance
  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and rollforwards to ensure the accuracy of income tax related accounts
  • Analyze effective tax rate drivers and communicate variances and forecasting considerations to accounting and FP&A leadership
  • Manage calculations, payments, and reporting related to our Tax Receivable Agreement (TRA), partnership distributions, and assist with other entity management functions

Compliance Oversight

  • Monitor changes in tax law and regulatory requirements, and proactively assess their impact on the business and existing compliance processes
  • Manage personal property taxes, sales and use taxes, and other compliance areas in coordination with external service providers
  • Partner with payroll, legal, and other external service providers on payroll tax matters as they arise
  • Identify and evaluate tax credits, incentives, and planning opportunities applicable to the business
  • Support entity governance matters, including state registrations, franchise tax filings, and related administrative requirements
  • Maintain current knowledge of corporate and partnership tax law developments relevant to the company's structure and operations

Experience and Education

  • • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Tax or related field; Master’s in Taxation a plus
  • • CPA or CPA candidate
  • • 4-7+ years of tax experience, ideally including Big 4 or national public accounting experience in corporate and/or partnership taxation
  • • Exposure to income tax provision (ASC 740) preparation or review
  • • Knowledge of corporate and partnership tax environments

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of ASC 740 income tax accounting concepts, including current and deferred tax
  • Familiarity with partnership taxation fundamentals and pass-through reporting concepts
  • General understanding of state nexus and apportionment principles
  • Strong project management and coordination skills; comfortable managing multiple external relationships and deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to translate GAAP financial data into tax-relevant information and vice versa
  • Strong Excel skills
  • High attention to detail, with the judgment to know when to escalate technical issues versus resolve independently
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with outside advisors and internal stakeholders across accounting, legal, and payroll
