  • Follow through with prescribed treatment and medication orders and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Determine which nursing tasks can be safely delegated to unlicensed staff, select appropriate individuals, and provide medication and treatment delegation, training, and monitoring.
  • Determine which students require emergency care and coordinate transport to the emergency room while ensuring adequate nurse coverage on campus.
  • Teach, advise, and counsel students, staff, parents, and other service providers on health-related topics, individually or in groups, through structured classes, informal information sharing, or arranging for information to be provided by others.
  • Teach students to manage their own health care using adapted methods, such as tactile identification of medication and Braille materials.
  • Assess staff knowledge of student emergency protocols and provide necessary training.
  • Communicate needs, incidents, and follow-up with staff, parents, and other health professionals by phone, in writing, and electronically.
  • Facilitate communication among students, staff, and outside agencies, including through sign language, and help families and medical providers understand the need for certified sign language interpreters in medical settings.
  • Communicate with other Student Health Services staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Write health care plans and the health section of student IEPs, and attend IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Collect and analyze health data and prepare reports for outside agencies and on the current health status of students.
  • Identify students in need of further health intervention and make recommendations and referrals.
